Module Six Question 1
Describe the narrative path that you plan to take. For example, do you plan to start by
describing the social science issue and ultimately lead the audience to the logic as to why
they should care? Do you plan to open with your research question? Do you plan to use
an overarching analogy? Do you think the narrative of your presentation will work best
as a single story or as a series of examples?
As you continue working on Project Two, you may choose to structure your
presentation differently. You can always edit this response later!
The route that I plan on taking to establish the overarching theme of my narrative is to
structure the opening hook using an anecdotal allegory to grab the attention of my audience
right from the beginning. By opening my presentation with an engaging hook, I hope to foster
a sense of sincere interest from the members of my audience, to hopefully maintain their
attention, and to hopefully foster a growing sense of interest and empathy on the social issue
that I will be to them.
Module Six Question 2
In your opinion, was this TED Talk engaging? Did you want to keep listening? Why or
why not? Make special note of any times you felt lost or confused while viewing the
presentation or trying to follow along with any technical concepts Ornish used to
explain his work.
I do believe that Dean Ornish's TED Talk was effective and that the information presented in
his presentation was important for the audience to hear. I was not necessarily impressed by
his overall ability to keep his audience engaged due to what I found to be a far too rapid rate
of speech as well as what I heard as a monotone intonation when he spoke. There was a
rushed quality to his presentation that left me feeling a bit unsettled and made it difficult for
me to remain fully focused on the topic he was presenting or the facts he was highlighting.
Module Six Question 3
After listening to the talk, do you feel personally connected to the issue? Why or why
not? If you were on a committee of people determining whether to approve funding for
Ornish's work, would you agree to provide him more funding? Why or why not?
As I have just mentioned, it was difficult for me to truly connect with this issue. I found the
rate at which he spoke, the monotone quality of his voice, and the feeling of being rushed, all
made it difficult for me to personally connect to this problem.
Module Six Question 4
Now think about your own presentation. Of course, you are not finished constructing
the presentation; however, consider what you have done so far. At this stage you have
finished two slides, the narrative structure and elements, the description of the social
science issue, and an appeal to the audience as to why they should care.
Provide yourself some honest feedback. What areas of your presentation need the most
work? How do you plan to adjust your presentation so that you communicate your
research effectively?
I have a strong belief in my presentation overall as I have really spent a great amount of time
doing my best to construct my presentation with a thoughtful amount of time and effort
invested in having a very well-written, well-researched, and strong final project. However,
after a full review, my anecdotal introduction could use some editing as I have found that it
may be a bit too long in length and could benefit from better consolidation.
