As we can clearly see with any use of social media, there are plenty of articles that populate when
scrolling through feeds that lack credible backing as they’re authored by the average citizen vice a
journalist required to adhere to ethical standards for accurate reporting. In this day and age, social media
presents content on-demand to its users, much of which, consumers accept as fact without batting an
eye. With approximately 62% of U.S. adults acquiring their news via social media platforms (Gottfried &
Shearer, 2016), how can we expect to prevent the lack of basis behind many headline articles. Due in
majority to the internet and social media platforms, brick & mortar newspaper production companies
have consistently dwindled with over 600 daily newspaper closing shop between 2004 and 2018 (Baran,
2021, p. 82). Journalists will always be a necessity in order to report accuracy and prevent scandals such
as the Wikipedia hoax involving a student fabricating an inaccurate quote spoken by Maurice Jarre
(Pogatchnik, 2009). Continued strict reliance on citizen authored news is likely to equate to consumer
ignorance towards fact vs fiction.

At what cost is the artist’s integrity compromised due to prioritizing financial gain over vision. Excessive
use as seen in the Wayne’s World clip is definitely compromising the artistic vision and an example of
selling out. Product placement is seen everywhere in today’ big media conglomerates. We must pay a
premium in order to reduce advertising on streaming platforms. As seen in every show we watch, brand-
name products are used but is this really deception? “Isn’t it a lie to suggest that the things we come into
constant contact with don’t have logos?” (Baran, 2021, p. 146). The tarnishing of a storyline through the
use of less than realistic brands impact the overall realism and gives a sense of fiction. Media like any
product requires funding and simply rely on product placement advertising to acquire it. Ray bans in Top
Gun, Etch a Sketch in Toy Story, Staples products in The Office; all advertising forms of product
placement.

In today’s day and age people are overly dependent on their smart phone or device to the point of
addiction and utter helplessness when in a scenario that calls for reliance of self without said device. I’ve
seen firsthand the walking disaster that is a smart phone user without their smart phone; unable to
navigate the world as interpreting maps is a skill no longer acquired, or performing minuscule vehicle
maintenance without a YouTube how-to video. Walking down the street or sitting on a bench as depicted
in the “Smart Phones, Dumb People” video, folks are glued to their screens ignoring actual physical
interactions around them. Life simply passes by as the priority is capturing and sharing the illusion of
living life for increased online social envy rather than actually living it. With 90% of American households
in possession of at least one smartphone and over 69% belonging to a social media platform, one out of
every three minutes of global internet time is attributed to social media use (Baran, 2021 p. 237). This in
and of itself proves the absent-mindedness of socially present parties.
Municipal wireless networks offer a viable solution to digital divide for many types of consumers
described within the TedX Talk video on digital divide. This steam-lined and affordable network would
allow all users within range to receive free or cheap internet connectivity. Several concerns within
American telecommunications companies portray a government with overall internet ownership that
could ultimately lead to data mining of its users. Unfortunately, whether seeking private home internet
or municipal internet this will always be a concern. Secondly is the construction cost associated with
building the structures needed to host this service. The benefit of allowing a single mother internet
connectivity in order to pursue higher education and increase annual income seems to outweigh the
startup cost associated with constructing a municipal wireless network available to all users within the
limits of the metropolitan area.
