EDLC 510 Does this individual require additional care (education, physical, entertainment)? If so, what skills are required of the caretaker(s)? Yes. Due to his autism, it causes lack with his integration. Is placed in an IEP level class. The first half of Kian’s day at school includes him being in a special needs class. The second half in a regular classroom setting to help break routine and integrate him into things on his level. Kian also has speech therapy every Tuesday and Thursday. He was nonverbal up util the age of 3. Speech therapy helps him to talk and voice his words. He often just made noises to talk. How has your life been impacted by the special needs of this individual? Khelie stated that her life has had major changes, especially when having a child with Austism. Khelie stated that she never knew much about autism but had to learn very quickly due to Kian and making sure he has everything that he needs. Khelie stated that at first, the doctors did not know he had Austism, but he showed unusual behaviors, such as not talking, constantly mumbling, making noises, and refusing to eat. Khelie stated that she had to get Kian tested multiple times. Also, with his schooling and food it was hard due to him not wanting to break routine. She had to develop and routine that matched his whole day when the school year was active, as well as at home and going to his “Gi-Gi’s” house. Student choice question: With Kian’s autism, and noticing that he did not start talking until the age of 2, does he start conversations with you now? How are his communication skills now versus when he was 2? Yes, Khelie stated that now Kian’s vocabulary is very wide now. He constantly comes up and tells you exactly what he wants. He doesn’t mumble or use his fingers anymore. Kian can tell you his favorite color, favorite teacher, favorite movie, and so much more. Khelie stated that now Kian is so verbal, that he doesn’t hold back at all. He will be quick to say when he is upset, mad, hungry, has to use the bathroom, and so much more. Kian also plays with his little sister and speaks with her. She also stated that Kian has gotten Student of the Month multiple times, he interacts in classrooms more and often volunteers a lot. After you have completed the interview, you will write a 200-word summary of what you learned from the interview and a 300-word conclusion. The conclusion must include citations from at least one scholarly resource and the course textbook. A reference page should be included.
