Discuss how and when to use social media in professional
contexts. Provide a specific situation (professional or current
event) and give details on how you can apply strategies to
support personal branding. Discuss why these techniques
would be effective.
When using social media, one must understand how to use it
and when to use it. Social media, in today’s world, is mostly
used for entertainment purposes, however, many employers
are utilizing it to help weed out potential candidates that will
be an asset to their company.
Using social media in a professional sense is completely
different from using it in a personal sense. While personal use
of social media may help you disconnect from the outside
world or even connect with others, a professional presence
can benefit you by helping you las a job or improve your
career (Walden University, 2019).
According to Walden University (2019), you must begin as a
follower; take time to explore how an employer uses social
media and observe how this manner can help you see how the
employer is utilizing social media. Then establish your
presence. Like, follow back, or comment to show your interest.
And always remain professional. You want to be respectful and
keep your interactions focused on the conversations about the
employer/company/or industry (Walden University, 2019).
I have used social media in a professional manner, not just to
secure a job opportunity, but also to help promote my
creativity in an online platform where I can sell my work.
Facebook provides an excellent marketplace for entrepreneurs
to help promote their companies. For example, I crochet and
on occasion, I would sell my crochet items to people. It
became so much that I had to create a shop for me to keep up
with demand. This shop, from Facebook, helped me create a
more professional interaction with customers in terms of
setting up prices, labeling, and even updates on when their
items would be completed. It went from customers to instant
messaging me for an item, to then placing an order on my
online store so that they could track the progress of when the
time was finished and when it was going to be shipped out.
I was also able to set up a shop page that showed my
creations or work and I was able to provide updates for my
customers to see, such as if I was taking a break due to
holiday or rest. Customers were able to interact with me
directly and I knew I had to maintain that professional stance
as I was interacting with patrons that were supporting my
work. If I were to be unprofessional, such as using profanity or
not listening to potential patrons and what they wanted, then I
don’t think my little online store would have taken off.
Unfortunately, life did get in the way, and I had to close my
online shop. But I know that I can now utilize what I’ve learned
here if I were to choose to open it again.
