1 Signature Assignment Assignment 3B: Signature Assignment Sabrina Sanchez National University SED 601 April 27, 2024 Part A: Initial Thoughts
2 Signature Assignment Do these learning experiences sound familiar? Do you think they are effective? The learning experiences that were provided by the three teachers do sound familiar to me. There have been many different times when I have been given assignments and was left thinking “What do I do now?” which can be very frustrating. The reason I thought this is because of my barriers and not understanding certain things with how they are either worded or not processing the information correctly. I have yet to be able to relate to the teacher’s side, but I would look at the students and see which ones were capable of completing the assignment but also recognize that they weren’t able to comprehend the content. Some barriers were there that included goals, the actual assignment, the method of delivery, and the resources that were required for students to use. How can educators design instruction that engages and challenges all students? Educators can design instruction that engages and challenges all students by using universal design for learning (UDL) and planning any goals, instruction, and assessment that way. Educators should remember the components of UDL which are: an approach for designing instruction for all students, is incorporated from the start, as instruction is being planned, and is based on a deep understanding of how humans learn. For educators to do this they should make sure that
3 Signature Assignment the goals for students are clear, assessments should be provided based on student’s learning needs, multiple methods of instruction, and all appropriate materials needed. Educators should anticipate the differences in how their students learn differently and recognize any potential barriers within instructional components. How can educators identify and address potential barriers when designing instruction? Educators can identify and address potential barriers when designing instruction by providing clear goals, asking the students what their learning preferences are, and observing the students while taking notes on which learning method works best for them. Every student learns differently, therefore, there should be different instruction for those who need help. An example of potential barriers in an assignment is when the teacher gives the students an assignment to create and give an oral presentation. To remove these barriers the teacher can provide options for students to demonstrate their learning, so instead of just an oral presentation then allow a recorded video or a written paper. Part B: 3 Takeaways 1) The part of UDL that says barriers come from the lesson design, not the students, is something that I agree with. When it comes to planning a lesson, I will think about each student and make sure that
