SCS 100 Module One Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Select four advertisements for analysis: Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple 2020 Toyota Big Game Commercial: Ft. Cobie Smulders Panasonic: Your Inner Man Burger King: Reduced Methane Whoppers Explain why you selected your four advertisements to analyze. First of all, the titles of the advertisements I chose caught my attention. Apple is a brand that I use and prefer to buy most of the time. It represents reliability and security. Then there is the rest of the title that deals with climate change. This is an important subject for all living things. Climate changes naturally. However, people are doing things that make the long-term change more volatile. One of the things that contribute to climate change is the manufacturing of products. Apple is a company that produces electronics. Companies like this produce emissions from burning fossil fuels to produce their products and to make energy. The fact that a major company like Apple is taking a step towards changing how they do business to help the environment is a great thing. I chose the Toyota Big Game advertisement because I am a Toyota owner. The title appealed to me. The brand is reliable and the vehicles are some of the best on the market. They hold their value better than many other brands when it’s time to sell or trade in also. I enjoyed the advertisement as I like the Toyota Highlander and would have bought one if my kids where younger and still living at home. I believe the meaning behind the advertisement is, that whenever you are in trouble and need your ride, you can always count on Toyota. I chose the third advertisement from Panasonic also because the title drew me in. I am familiar with Panasonic products and wanted to see what “Your Inner Man” dealt with. I am a man and I wanted to read what my inner man had to do with Panasonic. As I read the advertisement, it clearly talked about muscular men with different shapes cut out of their chest hairs. Some were feminine like things such as a bikini. I had to think on it to get why. All in all, the advertisement was attempting to show the quality of their product and that anyone can use it; np matter how manly you are. I thought it was clever. I chose Burger Kings advertisement because I found the title interesting and wanted to know more. Methane is a gas that contributes to climate change and global warming. According to the advertisement, livestock is responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. As livestock animals eat, they pass gas in the form of methane. This is something that needs to be addressed to help reduce the contribution to the problem. Burger King is announcing to world that they are aware of the problem, have conducted some studies, and are willing to share the data with others to help reduce the contribution to global issues like climate change. Explain how your advertisements relate to current events or to modern society. I believe that the Apple advertisement strongly relates to the weather events that are happening across the globe. Climate change is serious and if not addressed, will lead the world 1
to be a disastrous place. Climate change will lead to more frequent and stronger heat waves. It will also lead to water drought. Water is life and without water we will not survive. I would say that the Toyota advertisement relates to modern society in the way that it is a vehicle with room for six. Many families are having multiple kids and a vehicle like this will provide them with the space to travel comfortably. The vehicle in the advertisement could also motivate a family that drives two separate vehicles because of space, to upgrade to one vehicle with space for everyone. This could help with high gas costs and insurance on two vehicles, etc. With labor issues and the pandemic, everybody is trying to do everything possible to save money whenever they can. The third advertisement dealt with the company Panasonic and the Inner Man. The advertisement depicts three shirtless muscular men with different patterns cut into their chest using a Panasonic razor. Some of the patterns were feminine in nature. In today’s society, there is a lot of tension and mixed emotion when it comes to issues dealing with your sex and gender. I think that this advertisement relates to anyone who needs a good product to cut their body hair, regardless of how manly they are or are not. The first thing you think of when there is a muscular shirtless man is of his masculinity. I think that the advertisement showing the different shapes in the men’s chest aimed at getting people who are not comfortable with themselves to go ahead and try their product. Burger King’s advertisement relates to issues with climate change. Storms are becoming stronger, places where tornadoes aren’t common are getting them more frequent; all because of the damage we are doing to mother nature and our planet by contributing to climate change and global warming. Fast food companies like Burger King and McDonalds aren’t going to go away. There are more of these places than grocery stores in many cities. The demand is always going to be there. People like to eat junk versus cooking at home. That being said, livestock is needed to supply the consumers demand; whether it be for fast food or for grocery stores. Burger King’s attempt to help reduce the damaging effects to the climate issue by changing what they feed their animals is a great step. The fact they have conducted studies and found that lemon grass helps reduce the animal’s indigestion is awesome. However, there are many food companies that are contributing to the climate change issue. Burger King is willing to share scientific data that it has collected through testing, for other companies to review and do their part to help solve the problem. This a great selfless act. 2
