Kemp 1 John Kemp EEX 3764 5 October 2023 Module 7: Let's Learn about Graphic Organizers Assignment 1. Describe a graphic organizer in your own words and the rationale or purpose(s) for its use Story map: A story map is a really helpful tool for elementary students or any student who needs reading intervention, such as in an intensive reading class, to help him identify the main idea and improve his comprehension. 2. List and describe at least three benefits of using graphic organizers. • Students can better understand concepts and information by using graphic organizers to help them visualize them. • It offers students the chance to be collaborative and active learners. • It encourages students to use prior knowledge and sharpen their critical thinking abilities. 3. List and briefly three different types of graphic organizers from the resources below and briefly describe a specific concept you could teach using that style of the graphic organizer. For example, I might use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast two different characters in a story. • Sequence Chart – I might use a sequence chart to have my students represent the occasions (timeline) that led to World War One in a visual way. • KWL – As part of my classroom routine, I might use a KWL chart. I might use the K and W for the bellringer to gauge student understanding of the subject, and the L for the exit ticket to assess students' retention and knowledge at the end of the lesson.
Kemp 2 • Vocabulary Graphic Organizer: I may use vocabulary graphic organizers to explain any words that my students highlighted as unclear or unfamiliar during collective reading. 4. Review the four graphic organizers created on the Popplet program by students in another class. Then briefly describe at least three features of the GO's designs that help make them more helpful for students to learn the concepts and why they help. Since they are all illustrated, it is simpler for students to comprehend the ideas being discussed in the popplet. All of the descriptions are very brief because they only include the most crucial details or the main idea, which enables students to learn the concepts without being overburdened by text. Three of them use color coding to differentiate the sections they are explaining visually, which helps to make it even clearer and prevents students from getting terms mixed up or confused.
