Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) CIS 375 Nataly Rann
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) have become so popular now that you see many people of all ages partaking in these types of games. My oldest child spends about 50 percent of her day playing games on the Roblox platform interacting with her friends locally and people from other parts of the world. My brother loves playing video games on his Xbox and competes with his friends and other people virtually in a multitude of games as well. I have never been into games, and I don’t really have the time to be as invested i n a game as others do but for about a week, I engaged in Words with Friends2 via my iPhone during the spare time I did have, and these are some of the things I experienced and learned through the week. I started 5 separate games with 5 different people of Words with Friends 2, and to be honest I still have not finished one entire game and it has now been over a week. During the week that I interacted more often and played these games I never once communicated with my opponent in any way. There is a chat feature which allows players to interact and communicate with other players during their games, but I have never used the feature and have never received a message from someone either. The cognitive social phenomena I see in games like these is that there is no socialization happening during these games as there would be in a face-to-face game of checkers. Someone playing a face-to-face game of any sort would naturally socialize with the other player whether that's by talking, making facial expressions or physical gestures. You can have an idea of what your opponent is thinking or what their next move might be by just observing their behavior during the game. This is not something you can do in a MMORPG like Words with Friends.
Now, when it comes to playing MMORPGs like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty for example the interactions are much different than a game like Words with Friends 2. However, research shows that individuals who play such video games can sometimes have psychosocial difficulties and cognitive changes (Hurel E., 1). I think this has a lot to do with the way in which players interact with others in these games. In a MMORPG such as Words with Friends 2 there may not be much user interaction but there are things people do that would not occur in a face-to-face game. A board game such as Scrabble for example, the players would sit down, begin the game, and take turns playing until the game was over. This all wouldn’t take more than an hour or so I would say. My games of Words with Friends went on for days. This is because in Words with Friends you take your turn and then wait for the other player to take their turn, which is often not at the time you are online playing the game. While playing this game you can take your turn and then go about your day and take your next turn 3 days later if you choose and you pick up right where you left off. A face-to-face game of Scrabble would not work so well if you just left and came back 3 days later expecting to continue the game you started. One of the few things I think is nice about some MMORPGs that are available on mobile devices is that one's ability to play these games is not really affected by the environment they may be in. You can access and play games like Words with Friends virtually anywhere and at any time so long as you have an internet connection and a mobile device that can download the application. Some MMORPGs, however, may be more difficult to play unless you have the setup necessary. Many of the MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, or Call of Duty require an actual gaming system or a PC in order to play. Depending on what games you want to play there may be different interface requirements. However, most MMORPGs require at the very least a Windows 7 operating system or higher, a processor

such as an AMD FX 8100 or Intel Core i5-750, AMD Radeon HD 5670 1 GB or Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better, a RAM of 4 GB DDR3, more than 30 GB of storage available on the device, a keyboard, mouse, and of course some form of internet connectivity (Hardware Times, 2). As a game designer, an effective and intuitive interface design is key to making MMORPGs engaging for the users. When developing these types of games designers stick to “design patterns” which are patterns that have been developed over time by game designe rs to keep similar genre games generally the same in certain aspects because its what people expect. User interface must also think like a player and essentially anticipate what the player wants to do next. The user interface must not only be functional but also memorable and users should want to continue engaging in the game (William Nelson, 3).
