SCS 100 Module Four Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples from your advertisements. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe the underlying meanings or socially significant messages each of your advertisements communicates. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o This advertisement doesn’t paint a clear socially significant message as its purpose is to advertise the new smart parking feature added on to the advertised vehicle. There is no underlying meaning that is displayed throughout the advertisement. Jeep: Groundhog Day – Bill Murray o Again, there is not a significant message being conveyed throughout this advertisement. This advertisement merely serves as celebrating a national holiday and showing off a vehicle meant for the winter terrain in which it is used. Audi: Let It Go Featuring Maisie Williams o Out of all 4 advertisements, this is the only one in which it conveys a true message to the viewer which suggests that we switch to electric for the better of our society. The underlying message in this advertisement is that clean energy electric vehicles are what is evolving our society to this day. The company is convinced that eventually, electric vehicles will be mainstage, which is why they are encouraging a switch to electric for the better good. Mini Cooper: Created in a Countryman o Some may say this advertisement conveys a non-significant message of describing the lifestyle of the outdoors, but there is no real significant meaning of message being conveyed to the viewers. Write a research question based on a social science perspective and related to at least one of your advertisements. Is clean energy the future of our transportation system? Describe how you used a social science perspective to create your research question. Originally, I made a very broad research question of “Is there a significant advantage that clean- energy electric vehicles will provide over gas-powered vehicles in the future?” but then I considered the main arguing point. Is clean energy itself sustainable for the future of our society’s transportation system? When looking at the perspective of this question, I considered asking myself the question as if I were a sociologist. What socioeconomic changes would our society have to make to adapt to this new infrastructure model? The reason I chose a sociologist perspective is because sociologists do study organization of human behavior. With that in mind, I considered the people coming together to organize these huge breakthroughs in evolution that could occur based on these changes if they were to happen. People would have to come together and consider all factors to decide if clean energy is the way to evolve our infrastructure. The study of this behavior, as well as the decisions made to convey this idea is worth the time and effort to acknowledge. 1
