SCS 100 Module Three Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples from your advertisements. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe how groups and/or cultures are presented in all your advertisements. Body Type o All people who love to dance regardless of their skin color, gender or body type. Anyone no matter their religion or belief should be allowed to dance. Your Inner Man o Men are being shown with images shaved int their chest hair. Two of the images are considered “unmanly” one is a dancer and one appears to be a piece of clothing like a bathing suit top. The third is a guitar which was at one point considered to be a man instrument but now many women have begun playing. Beard Bibs o Men are being shown with coverings over their beards to keep from getting food and drink in them. #SeeBeautyNotGender o People are shown working to achieve a goal. A person is making a delivery, a model is walking down a runway and a person is cutting and styling their mothers hair. Describe the representation of stereotypes in all your advertisements. Body Type o A stereotype that is represented is that some people believe that an overweight person should not be out dancing and enjoying themselves. Your Inner Man o A stereotype that is shown is that a man should not do “girly things” like dancing as a ballerina. Or that a man should not dress in what appears to be an item of clothing that is traditionally considered to be women’s clothing. Beard Bibs o I am not really sure what a stereotype in this ad might be. Perhaps a belief that a beard would be easy to clean properly? Or that it would not matter if a beard is messy? #SeeBeautyNotGender o A stereotype that could be in this ad is that a person of a particular gender may not be a determined as another person. Discuss how your beliefs, assumptions, and/or values may have influenced how you analyzed your advertisements. One assumption that I made is that all of the people in the #SeeBeautyNotGender ad is that all of the people represented were born women. They could be transgender. When I first watched the ad I did not consider this at first. Another assumption that I made is that people in the world are accepting of all people. That they would see a person dancing that they may consider unattractive. People would get angry that another person is enjoying themselves when it has no influence on their life. Someone going out dancing does not impact you in any way. Why should it matter who they are or what they look like? 1
