Assignment 4 - Your Design Task – Amendment 1
In Assignment 3; you’ve designed, implemented, configured and tested a small network using 3 Cisco routers and 3 Cisco switches. The Director of IT has the following recommendations …
Design Task
The Director of IT has recommended that all DHCP services be managed from the Ottawa Headquarters’ router. This DHCP router configuration will be temporary until capital funding has been approved by Senior Management for a server farm. The IP subnet 172.31.xx.0 255.255.255.0 will be used and the DHCP server IP address will be 172.31.xx.100. The Director has also asked that we configure a DNS IP address of 172.31.xx.100 within the DHCP router configurations.
NOTE:
This new IP subnet must be added into Ottawa HQ OSPF routing protocol.
Please use a temporary virtual loopback interface (Loopback 99) on the HQ Ottawa router to simulate/represent
the DHCP/DNS server IP address.
Currently B1 Montreal and B2 Toronto are providing the DHCP services for their local LAN PC/workstations which have been configured on B1R?-CR-1 and B2R?-CR-1, their local routers.
The transition from the current design/configuration to the new design/configuration must be seamlessly with minimal downtime. You have been asked to prepare and document a plan for the Director of IT. The plan must include the following:
-
confirmation that the current design is working (test results)
-
what configuration commands will be needed
-
a step by step approach to ensure minimal downtime
-
back-up plan
-
confirmation that the new design is working (test results)
Once approved, please proceed with your implementation plan.
Your Director of IT has recommended the following steps:
-
connect and configure the current design and ensure that all PC/workstations can ping the internet and each PC/workstation can ping each other (Assignment 3)
-
document each PC/workstation ‘ipconfig /all’ via the cmd command prompt

-
save and review all the router and switch configuration files so that they can be analyzed
-
determine what configuration requirements will be needed to achieve the Director of IT transition plan/recommendation
o
e.g.: loopback interface on HQR?-CR-1 to simulate the HQ DHCP/DNS server
Recommended loopback #, loopback 99
o
Cisco’s DHCP Relay Agent on B1R?-CR-1 and B2R?-CR-1 routers
-
As part of the testing
o
Prepare a continuous ping test from one of the PC/workstation’s to the ISP/internet from each branch
o
Prepare a continuous ping test from one of the PC/workstation’s to the DHCP/DNS server at HQ from each branch subnet
-
Prepare and implement a configuration file or pre-configuring for HQR?-CR-1 router with the DHCP/DNS service(s) and associated configuration needed to assignment the appropriate IP addressing to Montreal B1 and Toronto B2 PC/workstations as per your IP Addressing and VLAN Table
-
Prepare and implement a configuration file at your set time to remove the existing DHCP
configurations from B1R?-CR-1 and B2R?-CR-1 routers.

Complete/update the IP Addressing and VLAN Table based on the new design, configurations and testing information from above.
As Network Designers, you will determine your IP addressing and VLAN plan as well as drawing a detail network topology diagram using PowerPoint or Visio. A copy or screenshot of your PT network is NOT permitted as your detail network topology diagram.

Questions:
1.
What is a DHCP relay agent? Where would we apply this configuration on a Cisco router? When the DHCP server is on a separate network, the DHCP relay agent is any TCP/IP host that is used to transfer requests and responses between the DHCP server and client. When relay agents receive DHCP messages, they construct a new DHCP message to deliver to another INTERFACE.
What was the DHCP relay agent command used in this assignment? On which interfaces did you configure this command? List all of them.
_ip helper- address 192.168.7.1 on G0/1.10 interface of B1 router
ip helper- address 192.168.7.1 on G0/1.20 interface of B1 router
ip helper- address 192.168.7.5 on G0/1.30 interface of B2 router
ip helper- address 192.168.7.5 on G0/1.40 interface of B2 router
What are the eight UDP services which this ip helper-address
command forwards? List the names and port #s.
