2 Discrete Mathematics has been an adventure for me throughout this term, as someone who is not extremely confident in Algebra, it tested me to my limits to find how to properly assess some of the equations throughout this course. There are many things that I have learned throughout the process, some that I do not believe I will use daily, and some that I will take with me throughout the rest of my career. First, my major in college is cybersecurity with a focus in penetration testing. This is a high level of ethical hacking that is used to probe into an organization’s mainframe and security systems to strengthen them following the outcome of the tests. This course has tested me in many different equations that I had not been met with before and were a struggle for me. One of the things that stood out to me that would help me is identifying and resolving algorithms. This is a major process when you are trying to hack into something, especially a database or some form of SQL server. It is said by Gary Haggard, John Schlipf, and Sue Whitesides, that, The course in discrete structures has two primary aims. The first is to introduce students to the rich mathematical structures that naturally describe much of the content of the computer science discipline, including many structures that are frequently used in modeling and implementing solutions to problems. The second is to help students develop the skills of mathematical reasoning to learn new concepts and material in computer science. (Gary Haggard, 2006) It is extremely important to be able to identify the usages of discrete mathematics within most computer science programs, as it is prevalent in ensuring that the algorithms and logs are correct.

3 One of the skills that I learned throughout the course of term was that in discrete mathematics, you must learn the exact formulas, or you will struggle immensely. There were many problems that I faced throughout the 5 competency assessments, one of which being the Hamiltonian and Euler circuits and paths. It is an amazing way to use it not just in graphs and theories, but when you are trying to determine a course of action, you can use a specific plot of points that you need to meet without going back to the original point. This is the definition of a Euler path. By explaining this process to an employer, I can show them that I understand this concept by using it when planning the penetration test for an organization and which points are most important to tackle and which points should not be revisited. This is a valid concept to use as it can help you plot your methods throughout the course of the security assessment. There are many key points that you should identify while in an interview for an employment position with a company in the field that I am studying. One of the many things that should be highlighted is the ability to perceive and understand critical thinking moments and utilize the proper skills to assess and solve them. Another skill that should be discussed is your ability to assess formulas and algorithms and how to properly respond to them. According to GeeksforGeeks.org, “ algorithms form the basis of computer programming and are used to solve problems ranging from simple sorting and searching to complex tasks such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.” (Prabhu, n.d.) . Algorithms are the foundation for computer engineering, science, and other forms of programming and it is important for someone wanting to have a career in this field to understand the usages and methods of solving the algorithms that you are faced with. By exhibiting these skills, there are no reasons that someone cannot obtain achievements in the computer industry. Discrete mathematics has been one of the most challenging courses that I have faced throughout my time at Purdue Global University.
