1 VIRTUAL TEAMS Running head: VIRTUAL TEAMS: ABSENCE OF TRUST Virtual Teams: Absence of Trust Name American Military University
2 VIRTUAL TEAMS Virtual Teams: Absence of Trust A Virtual team is a group of people who are physically located elsewhere that collaboratively work together to accomplish a set goal or task virtually. Virtual teams have become popular world-wide, especially now during this pandemic. It also allows an individual to have more flexibility with their work and personal schedules. Virtual teams must be managed very carefully to ensure that they are and remain productive. If they are not managed properly, this will interfere with productivity and allow negative barriers to get in the way. I think the absence or lack of trust is one of the greatest barriers to the productivity of a virtual team. Trust is believing that you can rely on someone or something at any moment and all times. It brings cohesiveness, respect, and effective communication within a team. If you have an absence of trust within the virtual team, team members won’t be comfortable enough to ask for help when needed or let other team members or let the team leader know when they make mistakes or even admit to mistakes. Afterwards, the team leader should encourage team members to do the same. During the beginning of each virtual meetings, team leaders should keep this rapport and relationship building going by having a few of the team members share something about them or what is going on in their daily life (Ferrazzi, 2014). Like personal relationships, work relationships take time to build, develop, and maintain. You can also celebrate birthdays, births, or other important holidays virtually (Lepsinger, 2015). This
