Comp 2 - Reflection Abdul Sameer Shaik University Of Phoenix MHA: 542: Leading With Authenticity In The Health Sector 07/10/2021 Debi Williams
Failing Forward: Share an experience when you have failed forward: I can recall the difficulty that I had to face when I enrolled into the Computers Science courses during the first semester of my under-graduation program. I quickly realized that learning a Computer programming language comes with a steep learning curve and I was not able to score good grades at all in the first semester of the program. Instead of giving up or changing specialization, I considered the hardship in the first semester as a learning experience and started looking into ways on how I can learn the skills needed to secure good grades in the next semesters. I joined additional tuition classes and after three months of dedicated efforts to learn a programming language, I was finally able to get a hang of how the coding in computers is done and I went on to graduate Masters program in Computers program. Share an experience when you have not failed forward: This is still related to my academics too when I was in high school and not sure if I wanted to pursue a career in Medicine. I was very interested in Biology and was advised by some of my teachers that I should take tests and apply for Medical colleges. I did not do well in some of the labs and the fear of the many years that it was going to take to complete under-graduation and Masters in Medicine kept me from taking that path and I pursued a degree in Computers instead. However, I was still able to find a job in a medical field as a developer for Healthcare Software applications and able to stay in touch with a few areas in medicine even today. What would you have done differently? I would have fought my fears of the long journey and taken tests to get admitted into a renowned Medical college and go on to become a Doctor in Neurology or Cardiology. Collaborative Leadership and Execution When have you led or participated in a team project that was successful? I work as a program manager in my current job and had to lead the team of developers to create a health care application for Radiology department as out last project. We were able to divide the complex project into phases and were successfully able to deliver the end product to the stake holders within the promised deadline.
What role did planning play in the team's success? Planning the execution of the project and making a list on who is going to work on what tasks and provide team members with clear direction and a sense of connection to the strategy of the organization helps people understand how the work they are doing aligns with the organization’s mission. Proper planning also helped different developers to make sure the work on their tasks is being completed in a smooth fashion and help as needed to make sure we were meeting the deadlines set by the stake holders. How were team members motivated to be collectively responsible for achieving project goals? Team members were asked to attend the meeting with the stake holders so they can understand the value their work was going to create and see how the project was going to impact in helping the clinicians complete their documentation and other computer activities in a faster manner so they have more time to spend with the patients. Team members were given positive feedback after the implementation of individual phases and proper project planning and management was done so the individuals never feel overwhelmed. How was conflict managed within the team? Conflict was managed by organizing routine meetings within the team so the members can bring up any questions and concerns and have a transparency to avoid any conflicts. Team members will also meet with the project managers and managers discretely to discuss any issues that they were facing. If your team was not successful, what could you have done to be a more effective and motivating leader? One of the things that could be done to be a more effective and motivating leader is to deliver feedback by taking the time to listen to and understand the employees’ perspectives. Leaders who are great at execution give a lot more positive recognition. Our research indicates that while giving a little more recognition did not affect execution, being above the 65th percentile on this skill had a major impact. The things that the team members like the most are clear work assignments and processes, ambitious but fair deadlines and plenty of feedback. It’s not just the boss motivating team members, the expectations of peer team members are powerful motivators too. Creating
