Graduation Rates Group Activity As a group, discuss and give a creative, critical, and specific response to the following questions. You will meet in Zoom, record the session, and submit the link to your group’s recording. There is an attached Word document for you to record the group's responses and take notes during the activity. Download the document and insert your group's answers. When you have finished the activity and recorded all your group's responses, click open below to submit the document. Each member of the group submits their own copy of the group document. 1) This article gives seven suggestions for improving the discussion on high school dropouts: School Graduating Rates are Deceiving. Here Are 7 Things That Would Help 2) The article suggests that graduation rates need to be transparent and explain why students drop out. Your textbook suggests several reasons students drop out on pages 242-246. How do you think understanding these reasons would help schools reach their dropouts? I think by understanding what is causing dropouts it will allow for changes to happen. By reporting the reason for a dropout, it can help turn the focus to the biggest issue at the time. This information can be informational and bring attention to changes that need to be made. With this info, it will allow people to make the necessary adjustments and provide the necessary help in certain communities to help lower dropout rates. These changes can help in many different ways and is a positive way to see growth. 3) Another suggestion is for districts to go Moneyball (that they get more data about students). What sort of data do you think that districts would need about students that could increase the graduation rate?
I think the data that would help increase graduation rates includes attendance, what teacher they have, test scores and behavior issues that have happened. These things can help administration come up with ways or rules that will allow for more students to be successful. This can include noticing certain teachers outcomes and deciding if there’s some sort of correlation. 4) Several of the people interviewed said that they also need districts to look at more statistics than just the graduation rate. What other factors do you think districts should look out that would influence educational outcomes? (You may want to consider some of the other topics covered in the chapter) I think they should look at different cultural backgrounds as well as teachers they have. This can allow for people to notice if there are any trends with cultures as well as any trends that involve what teachers they have. This can also be an opportunity to teach the teachers about different cultures and how to better understand them even though they are different. 5) John Gomperts asked “What if what counted in a diploma in a state is what an institution of higher education in that state would recognize for admission?” Do you think a high school diploma should be all that is needed for college admission? Why or why not? I think a high school diploma or a GED is the only thing that should be needed to get into college. For a lot of students, a diploma is the only thing they are able to get as well as afford. For those who live in poorer communities, getting a degree may be really hard. I think that demanding anything else but good grades and a diploma or GED is an unrealistic and unfair request of anyone.
