ELM-545 Phonics and the Science of Reading Dr. Nydia Palomino
December 20, 2023
During Block 2 of my practicum, I had an opportunity to engage in a variety of activities that allowed me to learn a great deal about the science of reading and collaboration between professionals. I had an opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of effective relationships between school professionals, family engagement, student motivation and its effect on students’ overall success. I also gained valuable knowledge about behavior management techniques and motivational strategies. The most valuable experience during my practicum was building a strong relationship with my mentor teacher who was an incredibly skilled, patient, and caring teacher. One of the ways in which I was able to support her in developing and implementing learning experiences that increased accessibility and meaning for all learners was co-planning a phonics lesson for a one-on-one direct instruction. This student was reading at kindergarten level. We focused our attention on R-Blends. Mrs. King was a great model. She carried out the initial lesson and
allowed me to observe first then practice the lesson on my own. We had an intensive letter sound
review in the beginning of every phonics lesson which made me understand even more the importance of phonemic awareness in literacy. Another wonderful experience during my practicum was bonding and creating a meaningful relationship with the students. It is extremely important for a teacher to make a connection and build a rapport with the students so they can trust you and allow you to teach them. It’ difficult to teach them when they shut down or do not respond to you. For students in special education, it is especially necessary in order to learn and develop new reading skills. Overall, this was an incredible learning experience that enhanced my teaching skills and taught me the value of collaboration between school professionals.

Pompeii's Pizza has a delivery car that it uses for pizza deliveries. The transmission needs to be replaced and there are several other repairs that need to be done. The car
is nearing the end of its life, so the options are to either overhaul the car or replace it with a new car. Pompeii's has put together the following budgetary items:
Present Car
New Car
Purchase cost new
$32,000
Transmission and other repairs
$8,000
Annual cash operating cost

Fair market value in five years

If Pompeii's replaces the transmission of the pizza delivery vehicle, they expect to be able to use the vehicle for another 5 years. If they sell the old vehicle and purchase
a new vehicle, they will use that vehicle for 5 years and then trade it in for another new pizza delivery vehicle. If they trade for the new delivery vehicle, their operating
expenses will decrease because the new vehicle is more gas efficient and the maintenance on a new car is less.…

Budgeting
Worksheet C–Create a Short-Term Budget Worksheet
Some people spend their incomes without thinking of what they are doing or whether their buying decisions make
much sense. They may realize that they must pay their rent and insurance bills, or make monthly car payments.
However, beyond these large and regular expenditures, things can get kind of “fuzzy." It is not uncommon for people
to run out of money from one paycheck to the next. Making and following a budget is an obvious answer to this
problem, but it is hard to do when you're not really aware of where your money goes.
To take control of your financial situation, you should first create a series of short-term budget worksheets. These are
documents that record all income and spending that takes place over a specific period of time, most often one month.
When bills, such as insurance, are paid only once or twice a year, you must include an appropriate share as spending in
cach worksheet.
