3 Executive Summary Purpose The purpose of this export plan is for the company to evaluate the realities of wheat exportation from the United States to Mexico. This plan will first introduce the product that is being exported as well as why it is being exported at such a high rate. Next, this plan will explain why Mexico imports so much wheat from the United Sates, as well as evaluate the market for wheat in Mexico. The research will also provide an analysis of the trade history between these two countries in order to forecast the future of the industry. This plan will also explain the implications with exporting wheat from the United States to Mexico. This plan will prepare the company to enter the international market of wheat exportation to one of the top importers of wheat in the world, Mexico. Lastly, this plan will set forth goals for the company to evaluate their progress along the way. Major Points The United States and Mexico are part of NAFTA. This means they can trade freely across borders. Each year since the early 2000s, Mexico has been a top importer of wheat from the United States. This opens a window for the company to jump into a billion-dollar market and industry. Each year, Mexico imports more wheat than the year prior. This industry is only increasing and is a huge opportunity for the company. Results Mexico’s population has been increasing each year. With low yields from the crop fields within the country, they are forced to import wheat to supply their country with food. With the Mexican diet containing large amounts of wheat, exporting wheat to Mexico is an opportunity for the company to join a largely growing industry with little to no risk. This risk assessment is
4 based off of NAFTA, previous years of exports, and monetary statistics provided by the United States Department of Agriculture. Introduction The product I have selected for this export plan is wheat. Wheat is a grain that is grown and harvested mainly within the Midwest region of the United States. Wheat is typically milled into flour and is then used to make a wide variety of foods (US AG, 2020). These foods include bread, muffins, pasta noodles, cakes, cereal and many different snack foods. Overall, wheat is a very versatile grain, and can be used in a variety of different ways. I choose to do this export plan on wheat because the world needs food to survive and the United States exports over 9 billion metric tons of wheat each year (Wheat, 2019). I also lived in the Midwest for two years and was amazed by the endless miles and acres of wheat, corn and soybean fields. I had no idea how much wheat the United States produced and exported each year. This export plan was a great opportunity for me to learn about the United States food industry and how exporting wheat can be advantageous to the company. I choose to export to Mexico because Mexico is second on the list of importers of wheat from the United States. It is clear that Mexico has a growing need for wheat and cannot adequately produce enough wheat themselves to suffice their needs. Hence, why Mexico imports as much wheat as they do. Based on research, we can see how the market of grain in Mexico is expanding and is a multimillion-dollar industry (US AG, 2019). Overall, Mexico is a larger importer of wheat from the United States and with the geographical advantage of Mexico being our southern border, it is clear to see why Mexico imports wheat from the United States.
