Some people may not see any benefit in abortion, while there are some that do. Many women are made to feel guilty for their choice in abortion and that can cause them a lot of stress. There are many studies taking place trying to show if abortions hurt or help or even compare to either getting an abortion or not. According to one study researchers compared women who had received an abortion to those who did not and were turned away and were able to find that women who had abortions had less anxiety, higher self-esteem, and a better life satisfaction. But women who gave birth to an unwanted child were more likely to be more depressed in middle age than women who had an abortion or wanted childbirth. If I had chosen a different way to look at abortion than the one, I did, I more than likely would be looking at abortion through a pro-life’s eyes. Meaning we would be working and looking at ways to not have an abortion or other alternatives. People who are pro-life typically speak about contraceptives and different ways for safe sex, adoption, and even keeping the baby. While pro-lifers don’t firsthand think about what could go wrong, it is something that they do have in the back of their mind. But they believe having a child is a better choice. There are stigmas against abortion because of the possibility of negative political, religious, medical, emotional, and mental consequences that it can cause. There are approximately 42 billion abortions that take place every year. People think abortion is immoral. However, others believe that the government should not have a say in such a personal matter. There have been so many negative views regarding abortion for a long time now. This affects every woman in America. A lot of people really started talking about abortion when Roe vs. Wade was being talked about and then overturned. There were so many people that wanted to talk bad about it and then people wanted to talk about how good it is that it was overturned. This was something that most
women felt was a very important downfall in history because we are now told what we can and cannot do with our bodies, again. Abortion is a good option for anyone who becomes pregnant. While this may be a complex issue for a lot of people it is very much so a large and important issue for a lot of women.

Exercise 2.2. A three-man board, composed of A, B, and C, has held hearings
on a personnel case involving an officer of the company. This officer was
scheduled for promotion but, prior to final action on his promotion, he took
a decision that cost the company a good deal of money. The question is
whether he should be (1) promoted anyway, (2) denied the promotion, or (3)
fired. The board has discussed the matter at length and is unable to reach
unanimous agreement. In the course of the discussion it has become clear to
all three of them that their separate opinions are as follows:
• A considers the officer to have been a victim of bad luck, not bad
judgment, and wants to go ahead and promote him but, failing that, would
keep him rather than fire him.
•
•
B considers the mistake serious enough to bar promotion altogether; he'd
prefer to keep the officer, denying promotion, but would rather fire than
promote him.
C thinks the man ought to be fired but, in terms of personal policy and…

Medicare recipients can purchase supplemental private insurance (known as Medigap insurance) to fill the gap in coverage left by Medicare. This gap includes copayments, deductibles, and prescription drug expenses not covered by Medicare. Several years ago, the government enacted regulations that specify minimum standards for items that Medigap policies must cover. This made the policies more expensive, and as a consequence, about 25 percent of the elderly who would have purchased some Medi-gap insurance purchased none at all [Finkelstein, 2004]. Consider an individual who consumes two goods, "insurance" and "all other goods." The cost of a unit of Medigap insurance is $1, as is the cost of a unit of all other goods. Sketch a budget constraint and set of indifference curves that are consistent with the following scenario: In an unregulated market, an individual with a $30,000 income purchases $5,000 worth of Medigap insurance. The government then puts mandates on Medigap policies that…

The UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is charged with interpreting the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESR). In 2000 the Committee released General Comment 14, “The Right to the Highest Attainable Standard of Health”. The General Comment is important for advancing our understanding of a right to health under international law because it: (choose one)
A) Sets out what has become known as the “3AQ model” addressing the conditions for health on the basis of Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, and Quality.
B) Creates new, specific obligations with respect to the delivery health care services that are binding on all countries of the world
C) Makes it clear that the absence of a right to health in the Canadian Charter or Rights and Freedoms means that Canada is in clear violation of its obligations under the ICESR.
D) Offers an account of a right to health that has been used by health advocates around the world

"Adults randomly selected in the lottery were given the option to apply for Medicaid, but not all persons

In the early 2000s, the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. implemented a health reform aimed at enrolling people without health insurance into an insurance plan. The reform required people without health insurance (at least those who could afford it) to buy insurance, and put in place penalties on those who nevertheless chose not to buy insurance. Below is the abstract of a recent National Bureau of Economic Research working paper entitled “Health Reform, Health Insurance, and Selection: Estimating Selection into Health Insurance Using the Massachusetts Health Reform” by Martin Hackmann, Jonathan Kolstad, and Amanda Kowalski. The authors conducted a study of the effects of the Massachusetts reform. They write:
We implement an empirical test for selection into health insurance using changes in coverage induced by the introduction of mandated health insurance in Massachusetts. Our test examines changes in the cost of the newly insured relative to those who were insured prior to the…

Suppose that some members of a population are infected with a sexually transmitted virus that causes disease X, and some are infected with another sexually transmitted virus that causes disease Y. Some members of the population may be infected with both viruses. While diseases X and Y are similar in that they are both sexually transmitted diseases, the disease X is much more harmful to its carriers than the disease Y is to its carriers. Condom use is highly effective in preventing the transmission of either disease. Suppose scientists discover a cure for the sexually transmitted disease X. This cure (a vaccination) will eliminate the virus causing the disease X from its carrier before its carrier can suffer any harm from the virus. Everybody is immediately given this vaccination against the disease X.
a What do you expect to happen to the prevalence of the virus causing the disease X in the population? Draw a graph with time on the horizontal axis and prevalence…

Quality Health Care in the U. S. In his inauguration address, U. S. President Barack Obama mentioned the poor state of the U. S. health care system as a fundamental issue facing the nation and his administration. The sobering truth of America’s health care system is that it dramatically under-performs. In an August 2008 poll by the Commonwealth Fund, 8 of 10 adults agreed with the statement that the health care system “needs either fundamental change or complete rebuilding”. This becomes even clearer when comparing the system with those of its international peers. In 2000, the World Health Organization ranked the performance of the U. S. health care system 37th in the world. In this and other international comparisons, despite spending more than twice per capita than other developed countries, the U. S. were beaten on virtually every metric of health care cost, quality and access. In other words, they spend more and get less.
