Lobster Case
1.How should the lessons learned be communicated within the larger Machinist organization
and across the labor movement?
The lesson learned to be communicated within the larger Machinist organization and across the labor movement by holding rallies that will promote for labor union right and all follow the 207 model. Running for an elective positions is also an example of how a lesson should be learned. 2. What unique political, financial, and social capabilities did the Machinists bring in this
unusual context?
The unique political, financial, and social capabilities that the Machinists brought in this unusual context is sabotaging a project, assisting the Lobster 207 to become a co-op, the also supported the lobster members. With support the members were able to secure a spot as a state representative. Becoming a co-op helped set prices instead of just following market price for goods. 3. What tensions arose and how were challenges overcome?
The tensions that arose were that the lobstermen were very distrusting of the Machinists, they feared the Machinists were going to take over. They had to all experience this and work together
and with one another to best suit the situation. Being distrusted was a huge challenge but working together to become helped. 4. Was this strategy replicable in other geographies or industries and, if so, what should be done
differently?
Yes, this strategy was replicated in other geographies and industries. By buying other lobsters in the areas, they encouraged to join the union. The union should consider the management of the workers. Keeping power and managing the workers should be done differently. 5. In what ways did self-employed and independent workers, as well as organized labor as a
whole, benefit from the outcome of Lobster 207’s experience?
They all benefited by the lobstermen forming a cooperative and a wholesale enterprise which the
4-year policy was adopted by independent workers, it gave the lobstermen a political voice and gave them leverage in the markets. They got lobstermen’s higher earnings which demonstrated the economic power.

How today’s unions help working people
Giving workers the power to improve their jobs and unrig the economy
Americans have always joined together—whether in parent teacher associations or local community organizations—to solve problems and make changes that improve their lives and their communities. Through unions, people join together to strive for improvements at the place where they spend a large portion of their waking hours: work.
The freedom of workers to join together in unions and negotiate with employers (in a process known as collective bargaining) is widely recognized as a fundamental human right across the globe. In the United States, this right is protected by the U.S. Constitution and U.S. law and is supported by a majority of Americans.1
Over 16 million working women and men in the United States are exercising this right—these 16 million workers are represented by unions. Overall, more than one in nine U.S. workers are represented by unions. This representation makes…

Under certain circumstances, it is possible for unions to better their interests by affecting or altering the union constraint in a direct or indirect manner. Could you recommend a strategy that may work for this goal, based on your microeconomics knowledge? How can unions put your strategy to work? Demonstrate the effect of your strategy in a diagram.

2. In the retail trade industry, unionized workers earn 19.0% more than non-unionized workers do. As you
learned in class, this does not necessarily mean that non-union workers who gained union membership
would receive raises of (on average) 19%, nor does it mean that the existence of the union increased the
wages of workers who were able to join the union by 19%.
a. As we noted in class, many unions prefer to grant union membership to workers with a significant
amount of work experience in the industry. In light of that fact alone, is the 19% difference between
union and non-union wages an overestimate or an underestimate of the value of belonging to a labor
union? (Other factors might also affect that comparison, but ignore them for this part of the question.)
