Week Four Think about Paula’s character as a whole thus far. She definitely displays characteristics of the “out group” as described in the leader-member exchange (LMX) chapter in your text. Give some examples of why you think this is. How can Sara encourage Paula to display “ingroup” characteristics? Throughout this episode, how does Sara display transformational leadership qualities, not just with Paula, but her entire team? "Leader-Member Exchange describes the relationship quality between a leader and each of his/her followers (Graen and Uhl-Bien, 1995, as cited in Singh & Rukta, 2018)." In this week's episode of Saving Sarah, we see that Paula displays the characteristic of the out-group. "In-group members have high-quality exchanges characterized by 'mutual trust, respect, and obligation,' whereas out-group members have low- quality exchanges and have less trust, respect, and obligation (Singh & Rukta, 2018)." It is shown that Paula displays the characteristic of outgroup because Paula keeps refusing to learn the new EHR system and always mentions how the old way of charting was acceptable. Sara can encourage Paula to understand the need for the EHR system by providing help and direction when needed and giving examples of how this can affect a patient. An excellent example is how she delivered the medication to the patient but did not chart in the right system. Even though Kenny is also at fault for not checking both chartings, this example can help Paula understand why charting in the new system is essential. Throughout the episode, we can see how Sara displays transformational leadership qualities with her team a good example of this is when Dr. Archarya is leaving the patient's room, he seems to be angry due to the patient being violent and complaining how there was no sign or something that says anything about the patient and mentions how the hospital one day will get sued because of somebody might get hurt. With
Kenny and a new nurse, Sara witnessed the scenario, and Sara let her team members come up with new ideas for putting a precaution sign on the door for safety. In that scenario, Sara demonstrated transformational leadership by listening to others and accepting offers from her coworkers about the new idea. Reference: Singh, J.; Rukta, N. (2018).
