1. Location and Connectivity: What are the absolute and relative locations of the region or subregion you have selected? What is the connectivity of this region to others? Southern Africa is in the southern region of Africa. The region is located south of the Congo and Tanzania. It consists of Angola, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, and Malawi. The absolute location is 24.3571 S, 19.5687. It is separated from Madagascar by the Indian Ocean. Congo is to the north and has dense jungles, making it difficult to travel by foot. Physical Characteristics: How would you describe the climate, physiography, landscape, and natural hazards of the region or subregion you have selected? Southern Africa is mainly made up of plateaus, which include rolling grassland called highveld. Also, plains called bushveld. Located in the east south and west are mountains called the Great Escarpment. The deserts are located mainly in the central part. The climate is mainly very warm and dry. Most of the rainfall happens in the summertime unless it’s along the coast and they mainly get rain in the winter. But winters along the coast are still warm. 3. Human Characteristics: What are the language families/groups, religions, races, and cultures of the region or subregion you have selected? What is the population density and economic development of the region or subregion? Note : This also is part of the Place theme of geography. The most common language spoken in Southern Africa are Zulu is the mother tongue of 22.7% of South Africa’s population, followed by Xhosa at 16%, Afrikaans at 13.5%, Sotho sa Leboa at 9.1%, English at 9.6% and Tswana at 8.0%. There are many more language that makes the region diverse. The Major religions practiced are Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and traditional African religions. Wildlife have been modified into agricultural land. There are a lot of National parks and game reserves. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park are some of the largest parks in the world. There are also a lot of mines, producing platinum, vanadium, diamond, gold, and cobalt. There are also big cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Ethekwini, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane.
