What is the connectivity of this to others? The absolute location of the southwest region of North America is 37N 111W. It's relative location spans from the east side of Texas to the southeastern tip of California, and runs roughly along the northern borders of Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. This region contains petroleum and natural gas reservoirs as well as copper mines. Copper mining in this region accounts for almost two-thirds of U.S. annual production. Tourism is also popular considering the cities Las Vegas and Reno are situated in Nevada. The Mexican border also runs along the southern border of this region. al Characteristics: How would you be the climate, physiography, ape, and natural hazards of the region egion you have selected? Ensure you s at least three of the physical teristics listed above for the purposes worksheet. This is part of the Place theme of phy. The climate in the Southwest region is arid and warm with low annual precipitation. It is the hottest and driest region in the United States. The landscae consists of largely of deserts, but also contain some canyons and mountains. Due to the dry conditions farming requires irrigation and large quantities of water. A lack of water can also lead to drought, which is just one type of natural hazard. Wildfires also pose a threat. These conditions arise from dry weather which is why it may seem surprising that flash floods can also be a problem.
n Characteristics: What are the ge families/groups, religions, races, ltures of the region or subregion you elected? What is the population y and economic development of the or subregion? This also is part of the Place theme of phy. The further south you go in this region, speaking Spanish becomes more prevalent. This is due to the fact that all the U.S. states contained in this region border Mexico. This also attributes to racial demographics, cultures and population density. Mexicans densely populate the southern border, with many cities and towns predominantly hispanic. Economic development has ceased to halt due to an abundance of natural resources. This region was once very much dependent on oil and natural gas, although now it has its own high technology industrial complexes, with Texas boasting one of the world's most productive technopoles. n/Environmental Interactions: o the physical and human teristics interact to produce notable ations of the landscape in the region egion you have selected? Water is very limited in this region. The two main sources are the Colorado River and the Rio Grande. Humans have created an intricate system of dams, canals and aqueducts in order to manipulate and store excess water for times of drought. The extraction of natural resources has led to digging, mining, drilling etc. which impacts the environment. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has a negative global impact as well as local. It pollutes the air and threatens water supplies. Which is a bit ironic seeing as the supply of water is already limited. ment: ow much ease and ability do ideas, and people flow in and out of the or subregion you have selected? What this movement? The Southwest attracts people from Mexico as well as America. It shares it's southern border with Mexico and has a large Mexican population. Mexican-Americans have assimilated well and brought with them their language, cultures, values and cuisine. I believe they are motivated by the prospect of freedom, and a chance to experience the "American Dream".
