1 Self-Care Assignment Ekta Uppal (118821222) Seneca College, King Campus CNC 206 KAA Trauma Informed Care Professor Nicholas Parsons October 1, 2023
2 Self-Care Assignment Self-care is the activities or things a person does to stay emotionally, mentally, and physically well. In the field of healthcare, this is extremely important to practice self-care as it not only improves the person’s health but also helps in making sound judgments ultimately improving the health outcomes. This assignment will discuss my reflection on the process of filling the self-care assessment highlighting moments of pride, surprise, strengths, and areas of growth and discussing personal resiliency and self-care importance. The process of filling out the self-care assessment was reflective and insightful, and it assisted me in introspecting my feelings about self-care. The initial expectation of filling out the checklist was that it was filled with curiosity as I wanted to better understand my resilience and self-care pattern. It is also important to participate in such self-care assessments as it can assist nurses or any other professional to better perform their jobs (Kelbach, 2021). Further, I was self- reflecting on each area of self-care that was mentioned in the assessments and some areas informed me about the signs of trauma that I have never stressed like not taking breaks between work. It requires honesty while answering each section with veracity because it may trigger past experiences and some questions prompted me to investigate areas which I have neglected. However, I felt proud when answering questions related to the family's support as I frequently talk to my family about my stressors. Overall, the checklist-filling procedure was motivating as it provided me with various options for coping strategies that I had never tried. The process indeed helped me to become aware of the signs of trauma and the strategies I have been using or want to use in the future to deal with that stress. Surprisingly, there were many instances while filling out the assessment where I felt off-guard. This happened because before completing the assessment I was very confident about my coping skills but during the
3 assessment, there were areas that I had never explored as a part of my self-care. One of those areas was spending time outside and doing some kind of physical activity to drain all the stress that had been caused during work time. In addition, I acknowledged that I have not been on a balanced diet which can contribute a lot to my physical health. These parts of self-care if not given adequate attention can lead to stress such as headaches, changes in sleeping patterns, restlessness, and many more (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2005). In addition to this, I was surprised about rarely participating in the spiritual domain of self-care. This aspect of self-care has always been in my mind, but I came to know the importance of mindfulness and meditation only after completing this assessment. Hence, it was evident that there are certain parts of my self-care that I have been neglecting but it has enlightened me to focus more on myself so that I can be professionally and personally more productive. After filling out the checklist, I was proud of the various sections of the assessment which I use often as a strategy to cope with my stress. I concluded that I have established a stronger network of support systems with whom I can share my feelings to turn down my stress levels (College of Nurses of Ontario [CNO], 2019). In addition, it was revealed to me that I have set my goals according to my expectations which are attainable and measurable. However, there were things that I need to work on so that I can maintain positivity and understand the impact of trauma on professional and personal life. For instance, I could use the peer support to have more active engagement. Also, I am not strong enough to develop spiritual self-care, so, I could nurture my inner self-care by practicing mindfulness, journal writing, participating in religious activities, or investing time in nature (Palliative Care Australia, 2023). Acknowledging these strengths and areas of growth can help in building a more balanced life.
