I chose to read the article titled, “Voice Recognition Still Has Significant Biases.” I selected this article because I was unfamiliar with the topic and thought that it would be interesting to learn a little bit more about it. The engineers designing these voice recognition clearly lacked CQ knowledge because they did not consider how the technology would work for people of other cultures and backgrounds. The engineers would have considered how the technology would work based on accents, volume of the speaker, etc. Engineers could work to build their CQ drive. If they were more motivated to learn about different cultures and backgrounds, it might have occurred to them to consider the way their product would work differently for individuals with different backgrounds. Another thing they could work on is their CQ strategy. If they had more XQ strategy, they would have been able to come up with a solution that tackled the issue of different cultural backgrounds. Sometimes I see unconscious bias in my classes. An example of this is when we have a teacher who is from a different country who might have an accent and is then mocked or said to be hard to understand. If people had more CQ drive, they would take the time to learn about other cultures and understand why people from different parts of the world have different accents.
