Jessie Alvarado ESL – 446 10/01/2023 Professor Kristen Carter Part 1 Clinical Field Experience C: Cultural Competence How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction? To support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction I have to provide instruction and resources that speak about cultural experiences. Allow students to share their culture in the classroom during specific holidays. How do you leverage home language and cultural assets? The way to leverage home language and cultural assets is to build on previous knowledge and to recognize assets and incorporate them daily. How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs? I involve the whole class in activities that support ELLs and special needs. Provide positive reinforcement and model positive behaviors. How do you demonstrate an understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of students when establishing classroom routines and procedures?
Break out into conversations with the class and allow for support. Modeling behaviors for students to see. Take time with every student. The 5 th grade class read an excerpt from the book Holes. The 5 th grade class was shy but read eventually. I had a great experience again and I was happy to help read and assist one of the students in reading and pronunciation. My mentor teacher told me she goes with the curriculum as much as possible but adjusts for student needs. We also made time to go into a regular classroom where the ELL students are to help the regular educator with the same
