In this analysis, I will be analyzing the album ‘ ASTROWORLD ’ from Travis Scott’s most recent solo album. The article I will be using to analyze it is Travis Scott’s new album ‘Astroworld’ . My popular culture item is an Album and it talks about Scott’s favorite childhood amusement park. This article pertains to the textbook based on Scott’s Ideology and his Mindset. These are 2 big factors that he expresses in his album. The two concepts I will be using are ideology and mindset . These qualities are very important when they pertain to yourself and your beliefs. Mindset is the way you perceive the world within your customs and what you believe in. Another definition for mindset is also the actions and viewpoints of a culture. It pertains to what you see and understand in the culture. Ideology is your understanding of culture and how you incorporate it into the bigger culture. The way people value belief and how these beliefs help form society into what it is. (Brandt and Clare. 2020: Chapter 2: pg 49 and pg 45). In the article, Gunn speaks about how Travis can be seen walking across a futuristic-looking frozen place in the Stargazing video . (Gunn et. al. on NME, Aug 2018). Ideology is the perfect tool to analyze this video. This shows Scott’s ideology for the album as it includes a place where the album could be. You can also see Scott riding in a shopping cart next to meteors . (Gunn et. al. on NME, Aug 2018). As the creator of the album, this show’s Scott’s ideology and creative thinking and how he was able to incorporate this place into the music and songs. When people think of this album they will think of that video and how he wants them to think of ASTROWORLD. ZD 1
They also speak about Scott’s mindset when creating the album because he was using a different sound than he said he would use on the album. Travis liked an instagram comment that was talking about him using a different sound on singles before the album, as he was just using the singles as club bangers and they wouldn’t make the album anyway. They also compared it to his previous body of work, Rodeo. Rodeo was a very good album and Travis said ASTROWORLD was supposed to be better than Rodeo. (Gunn et. al. on NME, Aug 2018). This shows Scott’s mindset by showing how much of a perfectionist he is. He’s not putting very good songs that he makes on his albums because they don’t fit the theme of the album. He made a good album before, and spent years perfecting ASTROWORLD after. It also shows his mindset on the album and what he believes in , and what ASTROWORLD truly means to him as a place. Ideology is important in that it controls exactly what Scott thinks and what he wants you to think. Mindset is important because it controls Scott’s actions, viewpoints, and what he believes in. The first way my popular culture object attempts to make culture meaning out of our shared world is through the album concept itself. The album concept is an amusement park/roller coaster. Scott takes you through the emotions you feel on a rollercoaster throughout each song and it goes up and down the tracklist. The second way Scott makes a cultural meaning is through his album rollout. He does this by incorporating his own world within the album. ASTROWORLD is a fun place, people just have a good time, and they enjoy themselves. ZD 2
