Response, Comprehension, and Analysis and Discussion – T.S. Eliot Answer each ques-on below in complete sentences. Response 1. What is your reac-on to this poem? What do you think of the speaker of the poem, J. Alfred Prufrock? (2 points) In my opinion this poetry was very well planned and very interes3ng. I believe T.S. Eliot did an amazing job of capturing the sadness and loneliness of Prufrock in this image. The speaker strikes me as a being a really unhappy individual. Comprehension 2. Reading check (2 points each) a. At what -me of day are the opening lines of the poem set? Evening is the 3me of day when “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” opens. b. What atmospheric condi-on does Prufrock describe in lines 15-25? The London fog is referred to in the passage of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” as an alley cat. c. List three ques-ons that Prufrock asks himself. Do I have the courage? Do I dare disrupt the cosmos? What should I assume? 3. Choose two passages from the poem and describe the mental images you created. How did crea-ng these images deepen your understanding of the poem? (3 points) “Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels and sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells: Streets that follow like a tedious argument of insidious intent,” This paints a picture of two young people in love having the 3me of their lives, taking advantage of the nightlife that a small, underdeveloped city has to offer. “The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window panes. The yellow smoke that rubs muzzle on the window panes and licked its tongue into the corners of the evening. Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains. Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys. Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap, and seeing that it was a soN October night, Curled once about the house and fell asleep.” This gave me the image of a bad presence or smoke that was present around the speaker’s loca3on but finally decided not to do anything but cause the speaker to be concerned. Analysis and Discussion 4. (2 points each) a. What is ironic about the -tle of Eliot’s poem? Based on the 3tle, the boyfriend appears to be professing his love to the woman. However, the boyfriend try to jus3fy the delay of the proposal to the woman. b. Does the -tle mislead readers, or does it enhance the poem’s overall meaning? Explain. No, I think that the 3tle is appropriate for the wri3ng. It shows that the speaker may not have the best mental health. 5. Based on details from the poem, how would you describe the speaker, Prufrock, and his feelings about himself? (3 points) In my opinion, the speaker seems mentally and emo3onally damaged. I guess the speaker is trying to say that his life is pointless and dull when he says, “I have measured out my life in coffee spoons”
6. What portrait of Prufrock emerges from lines 37-48? (2 points) He seems to be. cowardly old man, weak and old. He thinks that once he gets the courage it will be crushed by uncertainty. 7. Two stanzas begin with the line “And would it have been worth it, aXer all.” Both stanzas have an almost iden-cal refrain-life ending (lines 96-98 and lines 108-110). How effec-ve are these stanzas in expressing Prufrock’s expecta-ons of human rela-onships? (3 points) The ineffec3veness of Prufock’s aUempts to connect with people on any level is conveyed very well throughout these stanzas. 8. How would you describe the speaker’s idea of himself at the end of the poem, beginning with line 111? (2 points) Prufrock appears content with his future as an elderly man living by himself.
