Soundtrack project
Instructions:
A simple way to make modern connections within a text is to connect a book with today’s music. Because music comes in all styles and genres, there is a wealth of possibilities to relate thematic elements and characterization to texts we read. You will be working in groups of at maximum 4, curating and creating a soundtrack to the book featuring the album cover, back cover and the track listing. The breakdown for your soundtrack is found below: A track listing of 9 songs: •3 songs based off of the characters (played as their “anthem”)

^ This playlist has all the songs listed below in order.
1.
“Mad World” by Gary Jules.
This song represents Gregor (as the “anthem”) because of its somber, depressing tone. This song shows his need for isolation and his sadness throughout the story. Some direct quotes from the song, such as "Hide my head, I wanna drown in sorrow" and "I find it kinda sad the dreams in which I’m dying," can be used as evidence of the deep emotions that Gregor experiences. 2.
“The Archer” by Taylor Swift
This song is Grete’s “anthem” because it talks about resilience and growth. During the story, Grete transforms since she is presented as a little girl. She slowly starts maturing and goes from caring for Gregor to being resentful towards him. Some direct quotes from the song, such as “Combat, I’m ready for combat,” show how she is now more ready to face challenges, or “easy they come, easy they go,” which reflects her changing feelings towards Gregor. 3.
“A Million Dreams” by P!ink
This song is Mrs. Samsa’s “anthem” because she was always the most positive character of the story, always having more empathy towards Gregor and in some way creating her reality where her family is still okay and happy or a better reality than the one she’s in. The line "Every night I lie in bed, the brightest colors fill my head" represents Mrs. Samsa's desire for a better reality where Gregor is still human. Her family lives happily as she struggles to come to terms with Gregor’s transformation.
4.
“Breathe Me” by Sia
This song would be playing during Gregor’s transformation when he wakes up realizing he’s an insect and starts disassociating and thinking about work instead of worrying. This song has a very
sad, dark tone that adds emotion to the scene, creating a sense of vulnerability when we see what is going on through Gregor’s mind and all his worries about his work.
5.
"Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi
This song would be playing in the scene when Grete removes the furniture from Gregor’s room, forcing him to stop hiding under the couch because it is a sad song that adds weight to the decision Grete made when removing his furniture, knowing it would affect him. The song is about loss and longing, which can represent Grete's changing relationship with Gregor.
6.
"The Night We Met" by Lord Huron
This song would be playing in the scene where Gregor starts reminiscing about his life before his transformation, the people he used to know, how his family was before the transformation, and how much his transformation impacted everyone around him because this song is about regretting
and yearning the past, which can be reflected in the story. The song is also very melodic and has a
sad mood which adds emotion to the scene.
7.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish
This song fits the theme of “Search for Meaning in Life” because the song is about questioning our own existence and what we are here for, which can also relate to the existential crisis and alienation Gregor goes through throughout the story. This song can be played in moments where Gregor has a crisis and is reflecting or thinking back to his identity and who he was before and after the transformation.
8.
“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” Green Day
