This article is a portion of a book by Mercedes Carrington while conducting research with Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation. The portion covers the effects of disasters on the emergency departments (ED) covering what preparations the departments need to make and what issues they have when disasters occur. As stated in the article “quality of care may be compromised due to the increased demand on health resources which may exceed the ED’s ability to cope [6].”, stating the general idea how it may not be prepared. The author discusses the constant efforts of departments they conduct to prepare for disasters and the efforts that are needed to make sure they can handle the casualties efficiently. As well as covering data from past disasters to show abnormal influx of patients they face without the resources to handle them. The research covers what efforts needed to be made to make ED better prepared to handle the post effects of disasters.

This article is written by Mark W Horner is a professor and the Chair in the Department of Geography at Florida State University; and Michael J. Widener who is the Canadian research Chair at the University of Toronto in the Transportation and Health department. The article covers an issue with transportation networks during hurricanes and how it can affect the distribution of resources. Both professors give their academic knowledge of how emergency plans are established, experiment conducted, and the struggles experienced during hazard. These are to plan and ensure the distribution of resources to those in need during and after hazards. A common issue is the public not evacuating as stated “not all people will evacuate an area forecasted to be affected by a storm, which necessitates additional planning for public safety” (Horner and Widener 1620). The overall article explains experiments and past efforts in place that has improved efforts to transportation of resources such as, infrastructure damage and those who don’t comply to evacuations.
