Logan Professor Douglas English 130 November 26, 2023 “The Era for Happy Tech Workers Is Over.” By Nadia Rawlinson: An Eerie Warning About the New Workplace The epidemic of layoffs in the tech industry has proven to be spreading at an exponential rate. This poses the question of when and where this bedlam will cast its shadow next. Nadia Rawlinson writes in her evaluation article titled "The Era of Happy Tech Workers is Over.” that the large-scale layoffs in the tech industry have only been leaving employees with a heftier workload and high expectations to maintain productivity; even though there are far less workers. After explaining that 150,000 employees were laid off in 2022 (Rawlinson, 9) it is easy to understand how the remaining employees are struggling to maintain the workload. Given the professional genre and audience that she is aiming her article towards, the statistics provided help those impacted truly grasp the severity of this situation. Not only does it provide an idea of how many have been let go, but also a small sense of comfort that this is not unique to any one employee. However, Nadia portrays that this does not seem to change the opinion of the companies responsible for the layoffs, as they seem to only increase in numbers for 2023 (Rawlinson, 9). This is a clear notion that the worst might have yet to come, providing the reader with insight into the dark truths of a career in tech. Although Nadia gives a great description of what the tech industry looks like amongst the turmoil of layoffs and a demand for maximum proficiency, she does not expand on how this could seep into another workplace. We read that the industry seems to be affected by an intense rise in the interest rates these companies face
Gruss 2 (Rawlinson, 9), however one must note this is not a tech specific issue. As companies experience rising rates all the time one might ask if this could possibly affect them in the future. The answer is a resounding yes. This is a direction we did not see Rawlinson go, but that does not denote the importance of it. Nadia Rawlinson maintains the core idea that the tech industry has fallen into a spell of uncertainty for its employees and those looking for work. She caters to those involved by noting the number who have been laid off as well as some strategies these individuals take to continue their careers. This type of writing attracts the distinct group that Nadia is speaking to, the tech workers and those tied to the industry. Given the specificity of the industry spoken about, it is clear she is writing this article with the goal of broadening the understanding of these issues for those presupposed. For example, by stating, “For tech start-ups and founder-C.E.O.s, the past ten years were a bull run. Interest rates were low, venture funding seemed limitless, and valuations skyrocketed.” (Rawlinson, 9) Nadia provides insight on the past before explaining the sudden changes like interest rates that could have caused the layoffs some direct readers have experienced. This gives those reading more insight on why their entire careers might have been turned upside down Although it is important that those affected are informed in a direct manner on this topic, Nadia left out the expansion that soon many other industries and jobs could face a similar fate. The time period we live in has shown itself to be one of augmented advancement. Every day we find a new product is being released to replace the old one or fix an entirely new problem. However, this has led us to the issue of whether or not our advancements are leaving less room for human personnel. Nadia paints the picture that these companies do not plan on rehiring, writing, “We are entering an era of external investor pressure, higher financing hurdles
