have some extra money to spend on necessities. Second, they would have been able to help the stranger’s goal of finding the white heron. However, accepting the money would also be betraying the trust of nature and the white heron, which Sylvia loves. This detail suggests that the story
is set in a time period where people had to make difficult decisions between their values and their needs.
