ESL 546 Topic 3 DQ 2 If content area standards are provided for every grade level, why are English language proficiency standards necessary? How do you plan to use ELP standards as a teacher? How would you explain what they are and why you use them to an ELL parent? English language proficiency standards serve as a starting point in identifying the language needed in the learning environment ensuring the English language learner (ELL) is successful in their educational journey (Fenner and Segota, 2016). Applying these standards will allow me to ensure I am providing students with the proper tools and techniques needed for them to work on grade level tasks. I would communicate to the families of ELL students, these standards ensure their students is provided the appropriate accommodations to assist them in their learning. I would also offer families resources and information, such as sample lessons, on how we will integrate the proficiency standards into our classroom learning. Strategically planning and being flexible is vital when covering standards. Some standards may take students longer to grasp and may need more time than anticipated. Explicit teaching of vocabulary can also take time. It is imperative that we communicate with families on our expectations for students and how they are progressing in their language development.
