Teacher: Caitlin Hicks Subject Area: ELAR Grade Level: Kindergarten Lesson Title: From Caterpillar to butterfly TEKS : 6 (D) retell texts in ways that maintain meaning; Materials/Resources Needed: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Book Walk handout BME handout Crayons/markers/color pencils Construction paper Glue Anticipatory Set: Book walk Read book BME handout Drawing or collage students will create to form the caterpillar Objective/Purpose: The students will be able to identify beginning, middle and end to retell the story with assistance at 80% accuracy. Input: The students will need to know what the beginning, middle and end of a story are. The teacher will need to provide example for the students Model:
Using a overhead camera and the projector do the book walk and the BME hand out using a different book. Using butcher paper show the students how they will construct their caterpillar using construction paper and then will add their BME. Check for Understanding: The teacher will ask the whole class the process of the book walk. The teacher will ask for a volunteer to provide an example the beginning in a story. The teacher will ask for a volunteer to provide an example of the middle in a story. The teacher will ask for a volunteer to provide an example of the end of a story. The teacher will ask for a 3 volunteers to show where they would write the beginning, middle and end on the caterpillar. Guided Practice: The teacher will give the students their handouts on the book walk, BME handout. In about 15- 20 minutes the students and teacher will practice how to do the book walk and BME hand out. Closure: The teacher will informally walk around the classroom and will assist students when stuck on how to identify or word their answers. Independent Practice: The teacher will give the students an BME handout. The teacher will show the students the hard copy and will tell the students they are going to hear a different story. The teacher will play an audio book on The Very Quiet Cricket . After the story the students will identify the beginning, middle and end with assistance. Extensions/Differentiations: (Ways that the lesson could be modified for the following populations – GT, ESL, Struggling Readers.) : For ESL: -Beginner: The teacher could have visuals with the words BME handout where the students will sequence what happens in the story. -Intermediate: The teacher could have visuals with words and a word bank BME handout where the students will sequence the story while also writing first, second, etc. -Advance: The teacher could give the students a sentence bank and a word bank for the BME handout and the students will sequence the story in writing the sentences and putting the words first, second, etc.
-Advanced High: The teacher could give the student just a sentence bank For the BME handout and will have the students sequence the story while identify what happened first, second, third. For Struggling readers: -The teacher could do what they are going to do with the intermediate level ESL students. The teacher could have visuals with words and a word bank BME handout where the students will sequence the story while also writing first, second, etc. For GT The student could be given the option of two other books to read on their own and retell the story in writing using beginning, middle and end.
