Plagiarism happens a lot, not only for students who are in school but also professionally. When someone plagiarizes, they steal someone else's work or idea. Sometimes they tend to make it seem as if it was their own thoughts. Those who plagiarize try to express that it is not copied from whatever help they are using. For something to not be plagiarized, they must cite the source and know how to correctly use the sources. When it comes to education, even nursing education plagiarism is common. For students, one of the most common forms of plagiarized work was students paraphrasing without referencing the source. As a nursing student, a lot of our writing requires us to do research, write about something and state some facts. You must make sure that all sources are properly cited because if not you will get a zero. From personal experience last semester, I was writing a paper and did not correctly cite my items and was told that my paper was showing plagiarism. I was so disappointed in myself, but I learned from that one issue to make sure all my sources are properly cited. There are many ways that a nurse can plagiarize in the clinical setting. An issue that I have seen working in the clinical environment is when nurses are documenting and doing paperwork; it can sometimes show some concerns as they are not citing where they found their information. According to Carter, when charting on the SOAP note can also be a sign of plagiarism in the clinical setting. When a student in the clinical setting may be charting and the educator may chart the same or vice versa, the other person is not giving their own ideas; they are just copying what was already written. (Carter, H., Hussey, J., & Forehand, J. W. 2019). It is stated that even patient-to-patient charting can be a sign. Sometimes it gets crazy and busy but if you do not have the proper documentation on the correct patients then you are creating a risk.
Being in school, working full time and being a mom is very challenging. Students may want to find a way to not have to work so hard to complete their work and may find something that will help them get their work done faster. However, that is not the right way to complete things. ChatGPT is not a way for learners to complete work. The website can generate false and biased information. If you use ChatGPT you are increasing your risk of failing because there is a risk of privacy violations, plagiarism, and cheating. The issue is that these are not your own ideas, and you have no idea where they got the information from. You are also potentially giving out false information. You are at a higher risk of failing by using extra help rather than using your own brain, ideas, and sources that you can properly cite. (Intelligent.com. 2023). I think that an important reminder to avoid plagiarism is using APA writing. This will be helpful so you can cite what you may be paraphrasing or citing from a credible source. I also think that using the resources given to you like TurnItIn will help as well to let you know if there is any chance of plagiarism before you turn in your work and get a failing grade. In the clinical setting avoid false documentation and when writing policies and procedures make sure you cite the material properly with where you got the information from. However, making sure you are following the proper steps and not plagiarizing is more important than losing your job, reputation or even a failing school.
