LSO350: Disability Conversations: A Place to Start
Narrative Portfolio Assignment
Value: 10%
Professor Nancy La Monica
Rationale:
Understanding lived experiences of ableism is an important part
of this course. With this understanding, it can help us refocus our thinking beyond disability as a deficit perspective as learned throughout this course. Autobiographical accounts serve as a strong testament the lived experiences
of disability. Remember, we are moving away from an overcoming narrative – we want to critically assess the social structures of our world as barriers to people with these lived experiences. For example, think about what you learned after you watched Stella Young’s TED talk on “Inspiration Porn”.
This assignment requires you to reflect on narratives and help you, as an individual in society and professional in your field, understand and respect diversity within the culture, lived experience and life context of individuals we interact with daily. Over the course of this term, you are all working collaboratively on Student-
Led Reading Seminars with readings from the text, “Disability Visibility: First-
Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century” by Alice Wong (2020). You will choose three (x3) Student-Led Reading Seminars and respond to at
least one
of your peer’s discussion questions as posted on the blog. In each of your critical responses, you will use the concept of ableism to convey your understanding of the narrative presented. You will demonstrate the knowledge derived throughout the course, including but are not limited to lecturers, podcasts, content modules, readings, etc. in your work. Finally for each entry, respond to the following questions:
What lessons have you learned from the individual’s narrative?
How could this narrative be used to empower disabled people?
