Movie Analysis : Shadowlands Character : Marry Joy Gresham Backstory : Marry Joy Gresham is a soon to be divorced American Writer (poet) and mother. She expresses having undergone some mental, physical, and verbal abuse from her soon to be ex-spouse whom is an alcoholic. While in London for the first time, Ms. Gresham forms a friendship with Mr. C. S. Lewis, the renowned author of “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. Fol- lowing her divorce and during her second visit to London, Ms. Gresham enters into a contrac- tual marriage with Mr. Lewis in order to gain British citizenship. The marriage develops into a true romance over time; however, is short lived following Mr. Gresham’s medical diagnosis of terminal cancer. Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psychological Development and Ms. Gresham : Erikson’s theory was highly influenced by the works of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, yet rather than being on cen- tered on psychosexual development, it is centered on psychological development. Erikson’s theory is comprised of 8 stages with Stage 7: Generatively vs. Stagnation and Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair applying to Ms. Gresham. According to Erikson’s theory, Stage 7: Generatively vs. Stagnation occurs during middle adulthood (ages 40-65 years), and is a time where an adult will strive to create and/or nurture things that will outlast him or her (Cherry, 2021). Ms. Gresham development is expressed in this stage by leaving America to London to secure a healthy and positive environment for her son. Having entered into a contractual marriage with Mr. Lewis solidifies her commitment to the necessary changes required that benefit herself and her son’s future. Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair is believed to occur at the age of 65 years ending once de- ceased; it begins as an aging adult begins tackling a problem of his or her mortality (Cherry,
2021). Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer, a crisis which acted as a turning point in Ms. Gresham’s development, Ms. Gresham expresses this stage by reflecting back on the life she has lived and coming away with a sense of fulfillment; she has a sense of contentment and faces the end of her life with no regrets. If Ms. Gresham were to look at her life and be unsatis- fied, she would be left feeling as though her life had been wasted and she will have experienced many regrets leaving her with feelings of bitterness and despair (Cherry, 2021). Conclusion : No single person develops in life in a “typical” manner. What one person experi- ences to be happiness may turn out to be sadness for another. In the case of Ms. Gresham, her development during middle adulthood can very likely be portrayed as “typical” in the sense of having undergone various changing life events (i.e., divorce, moving to London, and falling in love) that ultimately lead to a happy and fulfilling end. Although Ms. Gresham’s life ended be- fore an appropriate age, she faced her death with confidence and reassurance that she was loved and that her son would be well taken care of.
