LITERATURE REVIEW 1 Literature Review Karla Rosales American College of Education RES 5153 Research Methods Dr. Bateman
LITERATURE REVIEW 2 Introduction Literacy is a primary skill in students’ learning, however it is a skill that students are having issue with specially when they are learning a second language. The problem I will be working on is low literacy skills. Students in X School are showing low literacy skills. This issue affects them in their education. Literacy skills means being able to read, write, listen, and speaking not matter the language. Most of the students are able to speak or listen the English language, however, when it comes to read it or write it, they are having a hard time with. Students tend to look at reading as something boring to do. By engaging students in literature, their performance in their learning will improve. In this writing I will explore some literature review that are connected to the problem to be able to find a positive solution for the problem. Review of Current Literature Theme 1: Reasons & Cons - Low Literacy Skills (Dorn et al., 2021) indicated that after the pandemic (Covid-19) the impact of students’ learning as noteworthy; the authors indicated that gaps in students learning already existed, this means adding to that, the disadvantage after the pandemic became wide. (Dorn et al., 2021) mentioned that based on i-Ready, a personalize program for reading and math that monitor the student’s progress (I-Ready Central Resources | What Is I-Ready?, n.d.), students’ performance dropped down 9 points in reading of 2021 comparing to the year before. Students who were below grade in their math or reading skills are building up their gap during the school year passing, this means that those students are moving up to grade levels with gaps in their academic making their learning difficult for them. When gaps are build-up, students tend to drop
LITERATURE REVIEW 3 out. (Regional Educational Laboratory Program (REL), n.d.) indicated that “one in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate form high school on time” meaning that around the “23 percent of students drop out or fail high school.” Theme 2: Parent Involvement Literacy acquisition such as alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness are fundamental in early childhood. This means that if students enter in kindergarten with this gap, without an adequate intervention support, students will be building up that gap in the next following years. (Hemmerechts et al., 2016) indicated that the involvement of parents in literacy activities increased the level of reading literacy of their children, at the same time the families with a lower socio-economic status showed lower reading literacy and reading attitude compared to the families with higher socio-economic status. Socio-economic status most of the time tend to hurt students academic in one or another way. However, parent’s involvement for small time shared with the children make a difference in their life and their academics as well. (Jordan et al., 2000) indicated that in their project Early Access to Success in Education (Project EASE) involved parents in students’ educations and exposure to literacy; parents were informed of how to support students reading skills, such as vocabulary sequencing in storytelling, and more. Parents were engaged at school and at home activities. According to the authors, the project EASE demonstrated that parents’ participation and involvement in students learning have a meaningful support to their literacy development (Jordan et al., 2000).
