Do not modify template language. *Be sure to thoroughly review the Module 04 assignment instructions before submitting. Reflection Journal Entry – Option 1 For this journal entry, you will write a reflection entry on your learning environment findings using the checklist for the evaluation of anti-bias and multiculturalism learning environments, identify strengths of the environment, and recommendations for creating anti-bias and multicultural learning environment. Use professional language and tone with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 1. S ummarize your findings from all eight (8) categories. Please respond to each category with a minimum of five (5) thoughtful sentences. General Environment: When walking into the classroom, it felt welcoming. There were appropriate pictures hanging on the walls and all the children’s artwork was displayed nicely. The children were playing nicely and were playing in each area appropriately. When it came to the educators, I felt as though they were being fair and genuine with the children, they wouldn’t raise their voices, they were thoughtful and patient. When it comes to small children, you need to have patience and I admire the ones who do have patience and don’t yell at the children as if they were your own. It’s important that we keep that in mind when being an educator. Library / Writing: This area was laid out perfectly, there was diversity in the books. At the writing table, I noticed the educators had put out diversity crayons, which were more like skin colors, and I thought that was an excellent idea. As the children are writing, drawing, etc. they can explore with different colors and talk about what colors they are. When doing this, we are teaching our small children diversity, without knowing it. Young children hear everything and by talking and asking open- ended questions, the children are learning about colors and how people are different in their own ways. Cooking: There were all different types of food that were displayed within the kitchen area. They had all different cultural foods and ingredients to allow the children to use their imagination and make their own dish of their choice. I love the idea of a cooking area simply because it gives us an opportunity to teach the
children about safety and different foods that others make and where it comes from, et. Dramatic Play: This is the area that I had a little concern about. Although they displayed different dolls of all cultures and had the appropriate book displayed in the area. All that was great, and I loved it, but I noticed there weren’t any dress up type outfits for the children to explore and be creative in what they want to be or what the dress up is supposed to be, etc. It’s important to display all of this and get the children’s little minds going and wondering how certain people dress, what they do, etc. Blocks: This is the area that I was concerned about, simply because there weren’t any stickers that showed the children what the toy is or where it goes, etc. It’s important to add stickers and pictures of what each block, toy, car, etc. is, so that the children can know what they are playing with and when they are done, they will know where it goes and how to put it away. Structure is something that we teach in young children, it works with them on their developmental skills and learning how to be in a routine and how to maintain that routine as we grow older. Music and Movement: Although music is noisy and can be loud at some point, it’s an important area when it comes to young children. We want them to explore in their music and movements, hand-eye coordination, balance, social, etc. In this classroom that I observed, they had all the music displayed and the children absolutely loved playing with everything and making different noises from the musical instruments. The educator also had music playing, so they could pretend they were at a concert or entertaining other people by putting on a show. Social Studies: There needed to be more pictures put up about social studies and more educational pictures throughout the room. Children are always curious as to what this picture is and what it means, etc. It gives the children an opportunity to be curious and ask questions, which works on their social skills as well. Overall Programming: I felt as though this classroom was displayed all in all, perfectly. Yeah, there needs to be some improvement in certain areas, but all in all, the educators done a wonderful job and they were doing wonderful things with the children. It’s important to be able to walk into a classroom and feel welcomed. Not only do the children need to feel comfortable and loved, but the families do as well. This classroom done a wonderful job on making the classroom welcoming and teaching the children different values. 2. Identify four (4) strengths of the environment for anti-bias and multicultural learning. Please respond to each strength with a minimum of five (5) thoughtful sentences Strength #1: English and Spanish, labeled in different languages. The educators made it to where everything was labeled and different languages to where the children were able to see the pictures along with the languages. It makes it easier for the children whose first language may not be English, they see what they are used to, and makes them feel more comfortable and welcomed.
