Reply to Jillian Reynolds Greetings, Jillian, I am a teacher at a specialty center, and I collaborate with high school-age students. My great nephew lives with my wife and me along with my niece. He is three years old now. When they moved in, he was a few months old. He cried every day and when he cried, it was for twenty to thirty minutes. As he got older, the crying continued and a little more frequent. I have a praying household, so we all went into prayer and asked God to show us what to do. We had a variety of specialists come into our home (by this time he was over a year in age) to observe and they said he was on a spectrum of autism. Through the years I have been teaching legal documents that society labels children with IEPs, 504s, Exceptional Education, and so on. In an article by Al-Attiyah et al. (2022), One of the major focuses of programs designed for children with disabilities from kindergarten to third grade, specifically those who attend either inclusion schools or special education centers, is to ensure that no child is left behind. Children living with disabilities (K-12), would have equal opportunities to be successful in their educational settings. The No Child Left Behind Act focused on closing the achievement gap among learners by providing equity and well-rounded education to all students from 12- grade students. Schools around the world have been short of trained qualified teachers to help close the gap in educating children with special needs. I have students that have special needs and I have professional learning as well. But that is not enough for these children. Just like we have teachers for every subject to teach, we need teachers just for the variety of students with different impairments to put the child in the best position to be successful in their education. The Bible tells us of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”
