Benchmark – Literature Assessment Plan
DUE: January 28, 2024
Formative assessments are a great way to track student progress. It allows the teacher to
keep track of their learning objectives as well as figuring out where the gaps may be during the
lesson. Also, by tracking this information using different assessments, it helps a teacher understand where they might need to adjust anything that they’re teaching. In terms of formative assessments that could be used in the lesson plans that were made, the students could
definitely answer questions on entrance and exit tickets which I think is a great assessment. The benefits of an entrance ticket are great to use after the first lesson going into the second lesson, and so on. By using an entrance ticket, the teacher is seeing how much the students actually retained and if there’s anything else that needs to be reviewed in the classroom (Dyer, 2023). The exit ticket method is great to use after each lesson. It allows the teacher to see what the students were paying attention to during the lesson and, again, if there is something that they need to go more in depth with, they can. Both of these assessments allow the teacher to adjust lessons as needed by getting a quick individualized understanding of each student. This can be used in each of the lesson plans, the book walk Lesson plan, grammar and writing Lesson plan as well as the listening and speaking Lesson plan. The use of and entrance and exit
ticket is so versatile between every topic and every subject and every lesson.
A summative assessment is an assessment that is given at the end of a unit to make sure
the students are hitting the necessary standards or benchmarks in the lesson. This could include
an exam, final project, paper, etc. (Formative vs summative assessment – Carnegie center – Carnegie Mellon University). Something that would work incredibly well with the end of the unit, specifically after the book walk lesson that was put together, was the extension activity of
the students putting their own short story together. They will be able to use the state learning standards that are mentioned at the beginning of the lesson. The students are expected to learn
how to read fluently, “orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings” while also being able to self-correct themselves when reading (New York State next generation English language arts learning standards). So, their final grade or final project to pull together their summative assignment is to stand in front of the class and present their fictional character book to sum up the lesson and to make sure that they have reached all of the goals of the Lesson plan. The students will be evaluated on their speaking, presenting, reading, and writing skills when they present their books that they made. The use of digital tools in the classroom are usually extremely beneficial. When students are able to use the smart board, computers, or their Chromebooks they are tapping into another way of learning. There are different ways to use technology to assist in the lesson, specifically with formative or summative assessments, in general. For the use of formative assessments, the exit or entrance tickets as mentioned before, could be on a Google doc that gets sent directly to the teacher. It is easy, there is less paper waste, and it is easier for the teacher to keep track of everything and create files of what her students are doing. For summative assessments, the technology is specifically good for the teacher. The teacher can keep track of and take notes on the student’s presentations on their computers and send out grades through the school’s grade system online. To help meet the needs of diverse students, it is helpful to use technology to help these students. I would provide a PowerPoint that shows exactly what I want to see on each page of their book. I would even, if necessary, let them use a program to create an audiobook version of their book. They can use PowerPoint to add pictures and make it look fun while using a speech to text assistant to write out their book. The students that are at a higher level are going to
be asked to stretch their vocabulary and use their technology to research words that they could use within their book.
