Self-Analysis & Final Reflection
Overview
Now that you have completed your work for the “With Social and Global Implications” aspect of your Engineering Economics course, you will be asked to reflect on your intercultural, team, and interpersonal communication experiences, understandings, and expectations.
Each question is listed on its own page. Enter your answers in the spaces provided for you under each question. Some questions are multi-part with all parts included as part of the same table.
This is a self-analysis and reflection assignment. Students will respond with a wide range of answers to the same exact questions, and most answers will not be strictly right or wrong. However, answers may be complete or incomplete, thoughtful or shallow, and given in good- or bad-faith

. Your responses will be assessed in terms of thoughtfulness, completeness, and whether they were given in good faith.
GenEd Assessment
(#GEA)
This assignment is part of the GenEd assessment efforts. This document will be subject to randomized selection and assessment by assessors from the GenEd Council. You will submit your responses to the questions in this document twice; one submission will be for the GenEd Council general assessment efforts, and the other submission will be graded by your instructor and count toward your final grade for
this course. You must submit both items.
Full Credit Extra Credit
Students have the chance to earn 5 points of extra credit for earning full credit on this assignment. Because the grading parameters for this assignment are based on thoughtfulness, completeness, and good-faith engagement, you can basically earn extra credit for replying sincerely and not phoning it in.
The extra credit applies ONLY to the communication assignments in this class, so if you missed points on GEA/communication assignments this semester, this is your last opportunity to make some of those up. Completion and Submission

Question 1: Cultural Awareness and Interpersonal & Intercultural
Communication
Strong professional relationships and cohesive, well-functioning teams require that
individuals develop an ability and willingness to learn, consider, and even think from others’
perspectives. The ability to do this well requires several elements, including that you are
familiar with and able to think critically about your personal communication style and
preferences as well as your own cultural rules and biases.
A.
Rules and Biases: Here, the phrase “cultural rules and biases” refers to culturally influenced elements of communication such as those in the Hofstede model. For example, the cultural context you grew up in impacts what you perceive as “normal” concerning verbal/nonverbal communication, such as eye contact and volume. Similarly, whether you are culturally inclined
toward individualism or collectivism will influence how you perceive yourself within your communities and workplaces, and how you approach things like teamwork. Below, describe three (3) cultural rules/biases from your
culture and provide examples for how these rules/biases may impact your expectations of and interactions with others. (~100-200 words)
1. Respect for Authority: One possible drawback in a culture that values leadership is a tendency to question those in positions of authority, which might restrict opinions and creativity. It has positive sides as well. Leadership can lead to stable decision making and strong team work as well.
2. Preference for Politeness: In cultures where respect is valued highly, it may be abandoned for the sake of harmony. As a result, problems might not be discussed honestly, which could allow them to continue. On the other hand, politeness and respect for each other promotes positive ineraction.
3. Team Harmony Focus: While a focus on teamwork is beneficial, placing too much emphasis on maintaining harmony within the group can restrict personal creativity and innovation and limit development
B.
How has your cultural awareness and interpersonal & intercultural competence improved, deepened, widened, or otherwise changed over the course of the semester? Include at least one example that illustrates how these changes have impacted your communication and interactions with others. (~100-200 words)
My communication abilities and cultural understanding have improved greatly this semester. I developed a greater understanding of the differences in communication styles and came to understand the advantages and disadvantages of cultural biases. For example, I now appreciate the efficiency of clear leadership structures because I recognize the benefits of authority in some situations. On the other hand, I have discovered that placing too much attention on formalities can discourage honest discussions, which is why I am working on more direct communication in order to resolve conflicts in a positive way. These realizations have improved my ability to negotiate different points of view and maintain a balance between the need for open communication in a cooperative setting and respect for leadership in individuals.

C.
How does recognizing and understanding your culture’s overarching rules and biases strengthen your professional competencies and enhance your ability to work with others and as part of a team? (~100-200 words)
Accepting and understanding the standard practices and biases within my culture helps improve my professional abilities and teamwork. Knowing that leadership is valued in the culture makes it easier for me to move across organizational structures, respecting authority and encouraging honest conversation. By recognizing my tendency towards courteous behavior, I am able to foster a productive work atmosphere while maintaining harmony with the requirement for constructive criticism. This knowledge improves my capacity to interact with people from different backgrounds and foster an environment of mutual respect. Furthermore, understanding these cultural norms promotes productive teamwork. I strongly seek out cooperative solutions and appreciate the contributions of every team member because I accept the collective essence of my culture. Overall, this cultural understanding enhances my professional skills and creates a more vibrant and inclusive work atmosphere.
