Tools For Appeal Jennifer McElveen Grand Canyon University ENG-105: English Composition I Professor Bob Staples July 24, 2022 1
Tools for Appeal Appealing to an audience is not that difficult if the right tools are used properly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses Aristotle's concept to persuade the readers who visit this website about attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Defined by the National Institute of Mental Health (n.d) “attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development” (para 1). ADHD is a well-known neurodevelopmental disorder common among children but can continue into adulthood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). The CDC’s agenda is to provide publicized medical and current information that is true, fact based, and backed up by medical research. Using ethos, logos, and pathos the CDC effectively educates its audience about ADHD and ways to get help. Ethos Ethos is a Greek word which means custom or character (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Ethos uses their character and trust to appeal to an audience. In 1946, the CDC was established and is now acknowledged as the front line in health awareness, counteraction, and alertness for the United States (CDC, 2018). By having a website that ends in .gov the CDC states that they are a government agency and are authoritative figures. Most people are inclined to believe that a government agency would be unbiased and have beneficial information to give to the public. The CDC supplies a list of references at the bottom of the page from health professionals whose research aided in the making of this website, giving more credibility to the author. Alderman (2018) states “much of the behavior of health professional has a profound impact upon the elements central to the notion of ethos” (p. 301). Causes and risk factors for ADHD are still 2
unknown (CDC, 2021). By admitting that the CDC does not have all the answers they are showing they can be trusted to tell the truth. Logos Additionally, the author uses logic and reasoning to guide the reader to a certain conclusion. The CDC uses logos to try to convince the reader to trust and believe in the facts that are provided. By providing the last reviewed day, September 23, 2021, it gives the audience assurance that the information is current. The wording is not complex with medical terminology that is difficult to pronounce or understand. Words in blue at the top of the page can be clicked on for easy navigation throughout the site. Links to learn more about diagnosis, treatments, adults with ADHD, and managing symptoms are provided to help the reader get more information about ADHD. These links help to confirm that the information and data being presented is truthful because outside sources agree with the CDC. Known scientific evidence is presented for symptoms of children with ADHD, such as daydreaming often, excessive talking, fidgeting, and impulsiveness (CDC, 2021). Pathos The final effective tool writers use to persuade readers is pathos. Pathos is used to appeal to one's emotions. The author is trying to build a relationship with its audience by provoking sympathy. Depending on how you view the picture on this website you may see a mother comforting her daughter, a child seeking love from her parent, or a happy and healthy family who received help because of the information from this website evokes a sympathetic emotional response. Informing parents of the known causes of ADHD, which can include but are not limited to genetics and brain injury, may ease a parent's concern (CDC, 2021). Letting parents know these potential causes may relieve stress and self-blame, allowing them to take the 3
