Consequences of the Fall and Contemporary Response Name: Carson Poarch Course: CWV-101-O512 Date: 06/27/23 Instructor: Robert Vaughan Be sure you answer Part One, Part Two, Part Three, and the Reference section of this assignment before submitting. Part One: Human Nature in Genesis 1-3 Use and cite at least two of the following topic Resources: textbook Chapter 4, Topic 3 Overview, "The Mystery of Original Sin" article, and Bible passages. Cite all of the resources used with in-text citations. Include all the sources you cite on a reference section at the end of this document. Based on at least two of the listed topic Resources, type your answer to the following questions in the box beneath each question. 1. What is revealed about human nature (from Genesis 1-2)? Cite and reference the textbook. Your answer in 100-150 words: After studying Genesis 1-2, I came to a further understanding that we are all created in the image of God and that it plays a part in our human nature. We learned that in the beginning human nature was good and God asked His children to live righteously only giving them one commandment. Although this is true there were still temptations and Eve gave into these temptations.“Humans were supposed to operate their lives according to wisdom under God’s Kingly reign” ( Diffey, D., & Holland, 2022). God’s purpose for all of humanity was that they would live in line with His commandments and His image. 1. What are the consequences of the fall for human nature (from Genesis 3)? Your answer in 100-150 words: The consequence consisted of Adam and Eve now knowing pain in many different shapes and forms. There was one thing that was sinful in this Garden and they partook of the fruit after being tempted by the serpent. God was upset by these actions and decided to punish them. “ Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Gen 3:16). This punishment was not only for them but for generations to come. People on earth are still being
affected by this punishment and the trust that was broken that day. Adam and Eve came to the conclusion that they would become more like God if they ate from this tree, being able to understand all things like Him. In reality, they had never been closer to God and would never have that opportunity in their lives again. Saying all of this, God knew that this would happen and it was part of His plan. He still loved them after everything. 1. What is revealed about human purpose? What does it mean for humans to flourish, in other words, to achieve spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being? Cite and reference "The Mystery of Original Sin" article . Your answer in 100-150 words: I think that we learn that human nature and our purpose consists of taking it upon ourselves to treat others as God would. God gave us the responsibility of taking care of the earth, the same way He gave Adam and Eve the same responsibility in the Garden of Eden. It was a blessing given to us and it is our job to give it to future generations so that they can have the same blessings as we have. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, their relationship with God was changed. It was much less personal and face to face. We now have to learn how to have a relationship with God based fully on faith and seeing His hand in our lives. As humans we can learn how to achieve spiritual and emotional well-being, which in turn allows our relationship with God to be personal and amazing. “It is only when our relationship of glad obedience to God governs everything that we will be truly free” (Shuster, 2013). Without God we lose sense of what our purpose is and what our goal in this life is. 1. How would pantheism or atheism (choose one) view human nature, human purpose, and human flourishing? Your answer in 100-150 words: Atheism is the belief that God has no existence or power over the world. I think that they would view human nature in a similar but different way from us because they would not see that God has a purpose for the way that it is. I know that they also would not look to God for guidance and to find peace about human nature when it seems that there is no hope. I think that they also would not understand anything about God's judgment, making them ok with making worldly decisions that are seen as immoral in God's eyes. Without a belief in God there is no belief that God has a purpose for them. I feel like this could make someone's life feel meaningless in an eternal perspective. Saying this, Atheism could come with different perspectives on life that comes with different purposes and meanings; things that we would never worry about!
1. The question, "How can an all-powerful, all knowing, and all good God allow suffering?" is called the problem of evil and suffering. Briefly summarize the Christian worldview's response to the problem of evil and suffering. Cite and reference the topic overview and/or the textbook. Your answer in 100-150 words: I believe that God has to allow suffering. In the beginning when Jesus and Satan presented plans to God, He chose to go with Jesus’ plan, saying that we will have free will and be allowed to make choices for ourselves. If God was to stop every bad thing from ever happening, we would have no free will and would never gain a testimony of faith and trust in God. This is something that brings ultimate happiness because whether we want to believe it or not, God knows us better than we know ourselves and always has our best interest in mind. I think that without pain we cannot know happiness at all, and life would become meaningless and dull. Finally Christians understand that God does not create evil, mankind does under the temptation of satan. “What is evident from the fall is that evil exists in our world because humanity has chosen poorly.” (Shuster, 2013) Part Two: Consequence of the Fall Today Select a Christian organization from the "Christian Organizations That Address a Consequence of the Fall" list provided in the topic Resources. Based upon your selection, research the issue that organization addresses. Use and cite at least two academic resources from the GCU Library. Cite all of the resources used with in-text citations. Include all the sources you cite on a reference section at the end of this document. 1. Based on your research, address the following: highlight how the consequences of the fall are evident in the issue(s) that the organization addresses; include statistics, causes, and impact on people (victim, perpetrator, others as appropriate). Your answer in 75-100 words: The Christian organization that I chose is Mercy Ships. Something that I loved about this organization is that it helps people that are struggling financially. Their patients consist of people that are all over the world who have birth defects of many varieties. Sometimes Christians believe that birth defects are in a way a result of the fall. Not that people who have them are cursed, but because of Adam and Eve’s mistake, there are hardships and pain in the world. “Though Jesus offers a cure to sin through belief in His name (Romans 5:8), the consequences of fallen humanity continue to be displayed in a variety of ways, including in the youngest members of society” (Houdmann, 2015) 1. Describe how this issue creates dehumanization and diminishes human dignity. Include statistics, causes, and impact on people (victim, perpetrator, others as appropriate).
