1. What is the Matthew Effect? Make sure to explain this completely. The Matthew Effect is a pattern in which students who begin their literacy education successfully continue to do well later in school, while those who begin poorly will lead to them doing worse. 2. Suggest ways to manage instructional time, so there is time for differentiated instruction. For me, the best way to manage my instructional time is PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! I’ve noticed that when I have my day plan out and everything printed that I need, I have an adequate amount of time to teach the whole group and pull those students in a small group that need differentiated instruction. I also use A LOT of technological resources that provide differentiated instruction for the lessons I am teaching. Some of those resources include assigned lessons from iReady or lessons from Flocabulary. 3. How do the authors suggest teachers can differentiate Time- time can be differentiated by spending a few more minutes on concepts that a majority of your students are struggling with. For example, if a lot of your students are struggling with phonics, then incorporate more time for that area within your lesson. Task- tasks can be differentiated by assigning different work to different based on their academic level. For example, while reading in small groups, use leveled text; for higher students use a more difficult story to challenge them, and use a shorter/easier story for students that are below grade level. Texts- texts can be differentiated by having a variety of stories in your classroom. For example, your classroom library should be filled with stories that are below, on, and above grade level. Also, incorporate other language books for any ESL students. 4. Why is it important for teachers to work with small groups? It is important to work with small groups because it makes it easier for teachers to give certain students the one-on-one attention they need, to observe their learning in action, and to provide constructive feedback. 5. What should teachers do specifically for English learners (ELs)?  Teachers should pair their ESL students with other bilingual students, if any, in the classroom to give them exposure to the new language while still being able to learn in their own language. Also, teachers should stress phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary in a small group setting. A great way to teach vocabulary is to make flash/picture cards with the English term and their language.
