Provide links to two vocabulary lessons located on YouTube or Vimeo, one for Grade K or 1 and the other for Grade 2 or 3. After viewing the lessons, compare the approaches to vocabulary instruction and describe the instructional strategies you might use in your future teaching practice.
In order to effectively teach grade 1 students new vocabulary, the video began with familiar objects and surroundings that they can easily recognize and relate to. This particular item can be found in various locations such as playgrounds, gardens, schools, offices, and even hospitals. By incorporating this into their daily routine, students will become more familiar with the name of this object as it is something they will likely encounter on a regular basis in their surroundings. One of the most beneficial aspects of the strategy that was implemented is the gradual introduction of new words, one at a time, allowing for better understanding and retention. The instructor requested that the learners speak the word out loud and then have their fellow students repeat the word for better understanding and retention. Through this process, educators will have the opportunity to evaluate whether this method would be a beneficial approach to testing students' memory, as well as conduct a self-evaluation to determine effective teaching techniques.
In order to enhance the vocabulary of grade 2 students, a specific word was chosen and read aloud during the lesson so that learners could become familiar with its pronunciation and usage. Furthermore, this word is not only defined but also exemplified in a sentence and clearly identified as to which part of speech it falls under. By having a strong grasp of vocabulary, children not only improve their ability to recognize and understand words but also enhance their overall reading comprehension skills. When a child is exposed to an overwhelming number of unfamiliar words in a text, it can greatly impede their ability to comprehend and fully grasp the meaning of what they are reading. In the event that a young child is able to accurately decipher words within a story, but does not fully understand the significance or context behind them, their overall comprehension of the material may still decrease. In regards to the second video, I have found it to be an incredibly effective approach to helping students become more proficient readers and writers. As educators, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize the introduction of new vocabulary in order to enhance our students' language skills further. By nurturing and expanding their vocabularies, students can greatly benefit in all areas of their language skills,
from their ability to comprehend and understand information to their capacity to effectively communicate and express themselves.
