M6.2 DISCUSSION: Bionic Eye No unread replies. 5 5 replies. Module 6: Lesson 2 Discussion A tiny telescopic lens designed to overcome a common cause of blindness in the elderly is not safe enough yet to be used in the United States. The device is the first of its kind. It is called the implantable miniature telescope, and its lens could free some patients of the special glasses and handheld telescopes they now use to compensate for a loss in central vision caused by macular degeneration. The miniature telescope contains two lenses that work with the cornea to create a magnified image that is projected onto a winder area of the retina, improving central vision. The device is designed to be implanted only in one eye. The other eye , left untouched would be responsible for peripheral vision, leaving the brain to combine the two views to form a single image. Getting used to that could require patient to undergo professional rehabilitation. The surgery to implant the telescope is more difficult than conventional cataract surgery and can lead to damage to the inside of the cornea. Miami Herald, July 15, 2006 Research more information on the "bionic eye". Determine the price of this new technology and the write an persuasive paragraph to the FDA why the technology should be implemented in the State of Florida Add the website address of your search site at the end of the paragraph. Reminder: Please make sure to comply with all Netiquette Guidelines listed in the Introduction to MDC Online Courses & Resources. This topic was locked Oct 11 at 11:59pm. The FDA approved the bionic eye for humanitarian reasons, and it is limited in scope to only a few people each year. The cost of the bionic eye device may exceed $150,000 for just the implant and the accessories . A bionic eye, also called a visual prosthesis, is an electrical implant that is surgically inserted into the eye. It improves light sensitivity and creates a sense of vision for people who have advanced vision loss. I think that is important bring this technology to the State of Florida because these lens use 1/100 the amount of energy that our natural lens does, which it means strained eyes will no longer be a thing, as we will be able to focus on something for as long as we like without issue or damage.
