Tanner 1 Jake Tanner Ms. Barrientes English 101 7 October 2023 Impacted too? Military life usually consists of moving around, seeing the world, and growing up quickly for many even learning a second language at a young age. This makes military children “brats” different from normally cultured children. This also impacts how they grow up and live the rest of their lives. Many military children are affected by their parents' involvement in the military and many realize the impact that the process of growing up like this did. Many brats usually end up traveling at some point in their life. It is uncommon to stay in one place. Most families are moved every two to three years. (Tracy) Mathis said she had lived in four US states by the time she was five. (Mathis) Many rats must leave behind friends and make new ones. This also means that they see more of the world and grow up faster than most. They learn to adapt to every situation they find themselves. (Mathis) This also means moving schools which can harm a student's education. Moving schools many times can be difficult as you are learning different curriculums. Many brats have the opportunity to learn other languages. All this moving around can cause a brat to be cultured differently. Most children grow up embracing the same trends, fads, and language as all their other friends. In the brat life, there is no “normal” cultural mix. Moving can wreck marriages and man brats have to watch their parents' relationships disintegrate. (Tracy)
Tanner 2 Family is another factor in brat life. Many adults and their children form very close bonds. (Russoniello) Many Parents get deployed for months and don’t see their children. Mathis talks about how she missed her father when he was deployed for at least twelve months. This is very hard on mothers and children not knowing when their father or mother will get home. (Mathis) Many brats talk about how their home is where they are. (Tracy) Families form strong bonds from these experiences. Their home is where their family is. Deployment is probably one of the biggest effects on brats. Many brats must deal with their parents going off to war and not know when or if they will come back. This is scary for a child. Brats are surrounded by war and death. Tracy said that there wasn't a day that he didn’t think of his father. Mathis said that it felt interminable. Many brats experience many diverse people and cultures. Most brats go to Department of Defense schools with other brats. This means that most of their friends are also experiencing the same things and had crazy experiences. Mathis talks about how her friends were Black, White, and Puerto Rican. Brats get to share pieces of all the various cultures they have lived in with each other. They also have a different perspective on the world because of this diversity. Tracy talks about how he fell in love with his German wife and they put their diverities aside. Russoniello talks about how different brats are loyal to their parents' branch and how they compete on whose branch is better. My mother talks about how she learned fluent Spanish and lived in several different places. Reintegrating seems to be very difficult for brats. They often bounce from job to job trying to experience new things. (Tracy) When integrating into society brats lose their way of
