When you define words your reader may not know. 3. What is denotation? Literal and explicit definitions. 4. What is connotation? When a word’s extended meaning is negative or positive 5. Why would a professor ask you to define something in your course? Most writing situations require extended definitions. Writing 6. How can you use the other essay modes covered in this course as a description? a. Division and classification When classifying you can define words with your classification. b. Cause and effect If your subject is defined because of some causal connection, use a cause-and- effect structure. c. Narration and description When giving a narration or description you are defining something. d. Process You are defining the steps to do something. 7. What circumstance could cause you to use more than one mode in your definition? When your extended definition is very long. Revising In the context of a definition essay, the organization and clarity of the work is critical. Review the requirements for revising the essay on pages 336 – 337 and add to your notes if necessary. Student Essay

Read the student essay, noting the expansion of the definition in the second version. Using personal illustrations and a variety of information makes the essay more interesting and more informative. 8. What are the three considerations to take as you write a definition? a. Make sure you keep your audience in mind. b. Make sure that your organization is careful and flows good. c. Make sure your beginning and ending is just as good as your middle.
