Dear Future Employer, I am writing to express my deep interest in joining your esteemed engineering firm as a co-op. In my recent project for the Cornerstone of Engineering 1 and 2 course, I was tasked to build a bridge using pasta and glue. Through this, I was able to strengthen my foundational masteries, and I am confident that my skills and experience make me a strong candidate for this position. In the project, I was tasked with researching, designing, and testing a bridge made solely of pasta and glue. This project not only allowed me to develop my technical skills but also helped me grow as a person. Firstly, the project honed my intrapersonal skills. Even though I had a group, many of the parts needed to be done alone, so I learned to work independently and manage my time effectively. To do so, I created a daily schedule of the upcoming couple of weeks; I set the deadlines for all the tasks to be 2 days before the true deadline, in order to not fall behind and account for any revision I will make. I was also able to set clear goals and focus on the task at hand, which allowed me to achieve great results. Moreover, working in a team environment helped me improve my interpersonal skills. I was able to communicate with my team members effectively and collaborate with them to achieve our common goal. Any issue that we had, I would inform them via email or text message; this way we had very clear communication. I also learned to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the project. One instance is when one of my team members was unable to meet for one of our meetings, so I adapted and suggested another meeting time where we were all available. The project also helped me develop several valuable attributes, such as creativity, problem-solving skills, and open-mindness. I was able to use my creative skills to come up with new and innovative solutions to the problems we encountered during the project. For example, when we were transporting the bridge to the testing room, a piece snapped. As a quick solution I suggested creating a splint by adding two pasta sticks on each side of the broken piece. This was a successful solution because it did not break during testing. This project also developed my open-mindedness; working with a team brings people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives together. Each person had different viewpoints that broadened my understanding and helped me see things from a new angle. Additionally, the project allowed me to expand my strategic toolkit. I was able to think critically and make informed decisions based on data and evidence. My problem-solving skills were put to the test, and I was able to find solutions to complex issues, such as fixing the measurements of all the pieces of the bridge because the Truss Bridge structure we wanted to achieve required us to change the number of support poles needed. Consequently, my attention to detail helped me to ensure that every aspect of the project was completed to the highest standard. I also developed my research skills, which allowed me to gather information on the best materials and techniques to use in the project. This helped me when deciding what type of pasta should be used to build the bridge. In conclusion, I am eager to bring my skills and experience to your engineering firm and to continue learning and growing as a professional. I am confident that my participation in the ‘Pasta Bridge’ project has prepared me to be a valuable member of your team. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further and thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, Celine Habr
