Cheyna Gray 10/28/22 English 102 Project 1 Draft The Harsh Reality of Being Goth Goth or alternative community faces a lot of problems. Many people place harsh stereotypes on people in the goth and alternative community and never really get the chance to learn about different perspectives and how they can be dangerous in the current era of society. My purpose is to Spread awareness because it could potentially prevent future bullying and reduce the stigma about people in the goth and alternative community. Goth is an inclusive subculture that includes many demographic groups such as punks, industrial rockers, emo kids alike. However, the older generations do not accept goths. They still consider them to be outsiders even though they look different than most other kids their age. Most non-goth kids want nothing to do with them - which can make it hard to fit in socially. This treatment is unfair since many other subcultures accept members of all ages without judgment or bullying behavior. One of the major causes of the problems is the lack of knowledge. This lack of knowledge has resulted in many horrendous incidents around the world. Some causes and effects of the problems that goths and alternatives face are having stereotypes placed on
them, being bullied, and struggling with mental health. According to The Huffington Post ( https://www.huffpost.com/entry/goth-culture-and-depression- goths_n_55dfde09e4b0aec9f352cd69 ) Goth teens are more likely to be depressed This chart shows the odds ratio for depression self-harm in those who identify as goth. . The goth/alternative community has been targeted for years and has been given a bad reputation, many people associate the community with being ‘Devil worshippers” or “evil”. People who identify as goth are also bullied due to their interest in dark culture and sometimes due to their appearance. Even if a person changes his interest in dark culture, they may never escape his past if he was bullied for their interest in it in younger days. This is a problem because those false statements have caused so many people to be bullied in and out of schools. The major event that caused people to begin taking the issues seriously is the case of Sophie Lancaster, a girl murdered because she was goth. Lately, there has been more of an acceptance but many places, especially in the south, still stick with their stereotypical thoughts about goths and alternatives.
To receive first-hand information on being goth in today’s society I have conducted a survey including my online friends that identify as goth or alternative. I also asked my online friends how they deal with being targeted and what they would change about the way people perceive them. One example for both answers comes from my friend Katerina. She says that she deals with being targeted by coming to her family and close friends for support and if she could change anything about how people perceive her it would be that they see her as evil or automatically think she doesn’t have a good life, she identifies as goth because it makes her happy not because she is sad . Most people associate goths with gloomy personality traits such as depression, isolation, and social alienation. However, goths are not depressed; they're just interested in a different thing from most other people. The problem begins to get worse for people who identify as goth and are also people of color. According to a blog published on Gothic Bard ( https://gothicbard.com/discrimination-of-goths-and-people-of-color/ ) There has always been a struggle or acceptance for goths, African-Americans and people of color among . In this blog the author speaks about his own experience with discrimination and judgment because of being a goth person of color. Being goth is not widely accepted and with the stereotypes placed around it, it makes it harder for people of color to fit in . Many ethnic households demonize the goth culture and try to deter their children from becoming goth. The author speaks about his time in school and how he was picked on often, made fun and made an outcast throughout middle and high school . In conclusion, people who identify as goth/alternative has been targeted and harassed for many years resulting serious and gruesome effects. Goths and alternatives continue to face problems due to the lack of knowledge. This lack of knowledge has allowed heinous crimes and bulling to continue, and a lot of people do not pay enough attention to how this effect people who identify as goth and/or alternative. My purpose for this analysis was to spread awareness and hopefully encourage people to think twice about the consequences that they could cause from being judgmental and cruel to the goth and alternative community. Self-Assessment I feel that my draft meets most of the rubric expectations but needs improvement. I feel that my strengths are in my survey and the inserted media. Questions that I have about my draft are if it is repetitive, if I included enough detail, and if my analysis flows
together. I would improve my organization because I am not sure if it is easy to follow along and grasp the purpose of my analysis.
